Posted on letsrun and twitter, didn't see it on here.
For those interested, Lukas Verzbicas first Olympic distance Triathlon was today and he recorded a DNF! Different accounts as to why, some saying; broken foot, being a pussy, not ready for distance.
Apparently he was in third place about halfway into the 10K run so I imagine something bad happened? According to him his motto is to always finish a race. I would guess fuel issues or bad cramping.
Too bad, should've stuck to running for longer!

Well judging by his twitter:
Don't ever compete with a broken bone in your body no matter how much you want to. Learned it today
It sounds like he has a broken bone somewhere in his body...

Yes, because one DNF in a very demanding race means he will never be successful at the "Teiathlon".
Stupid comment by you.

Notice I said "stick to running LONGER" which means he should have ran another season or two. I knew it would be Triathlon some day, I just thought it was too soon. He will be back, and when healthy he will be very successful. Stupider response by you...

no, stupid response by you.... him sticking to running longer would have hurt his chances in a triathlon more than going into strictly tri training

It'd be interesting to have a look at the history of who the best triathletes are these days. Did any of them start out in XC/Track and if so, how long did they stay with it?

In the bios of the medalists, there's no mention of any Track/XC history, though the bios are a bit limited.

There is no reason to believe that running a season or two longer would have benefited him at all.
Even stupider avatar by you.

According to his book, Chris McCormack (Macca) won numerous Australian Athletic and cross country titles and his times were pretty decent. Not as fast as LV, but fairly respectable.

I don't think so. Clearly running is not the discipline at which he needs to improve most. If he stuck to running he wouldn't have time to work on the other phases of the tri where he certainly has room for improvement (and that's NOT a knock, just an observation).

Agree... and those improvements will take some time. He'll need to change his physique fairly significantly; he's way too frail to be effective in the water at a high-pro level.

Disagree. The bike is where he needs and will see the most improvement. But agree that it will take some time. I also don't think he is as frail as some might think from looking at him. But, the bike is another animal altogether. His step-dad, Romas, believes that as you improve on the bike, your run suffers. If that is true, the key for LV is to find that balance where he becomes good enough in the water and on the bike leg to stay close, but still maintains his dominance during the run. My guess is that LV will specialize in exciting finishes, as he tries to catch the leaders on the run leg before they reach the finish line. With his charisma and skill at using social media, he and his brand could become huge, no matter what the "haters" think.

He's 6'1 135. That's frail

Its just my opinion, but as I said, I don't think LV is as frail as some might think, apparently you included. Being 6'1"/135 means he is thin. Thin is not the same as frail. I had two grandmothers who were both thin. But one was thin and frail, while the other was thin and sturdy. I think a better word to describe LV would be sinewy, as in lean, muscular and tough.

That is a great description, you definitely got me

Wasn't his Tweeter (sp?) quoted as saying he was competing with a broken bone? Any news on what really happened?

Semantic differences aside... if you look at a world-class triathlete and then look at LV, it's not unreasonable to assume that he'll need to add upper-body muscle to be representative in the swim. Not insinuating that he's not strong or tough.

Any yet that upper body strength will hurt him in 2 of 2 of the remaining events. I am obviously no triathlete but to me it would make much better sense to be competitive enough in the swim and strong in the legs on the Bike/Run portion.
He presumably has more running talent than anyone else he will be facing (how many sub-4 triathletes are there?). Hasn't he admitted the bike is his weakest leg (or is it swimming...:p )? So he must realize that is where he needs to train.
