I've got a version from The Weavers. I think it's the best I've ever heard.

According to folklorist Alan Lomax in his book Our Singing Country (1941), the melody of "The House of the Rising Run" is a traditional English ballad and the lyrics were written by Georgia Turner and Bert Martin (both from Kentucky). The song was first recorded in the 1920s by black bluesman Texas Alexander and later covered by Leadbelly, Charlie Byrd, Roy Acuff, Woody Guthrie, the Weavers, Peter, Paul & Mary, Henry Mancini :eek::eek:, Dolly Parton, David Allan Coe, John Fahey, Waylon Jennings, Tim Hardin, Buster Poindexter, Marianne Faithful, Tracy Chapman and Bob Dylan . . . just to name a few.
Henry Mancini covered the House of the Rising Son. ***GULP****

Alger 'Texas' Alexander recorded Rising Sun Blues and it often gets cited as an early or THE first version---Nope--- not the same song nor a seminial version.

Ya'know I'm not that thrilled listening to when the women sing the song...though the Ronnie Glibert one is I think hte best of them.
Weavers...? Hmm Danny will know..I'll ask 'em.

Patti this is the Weavers version Ronnie Gilbert was in the original group with Lee Hays,Fred Hellerman and Pete Seeger- after Seeger left the group Eric Darling joined-
You should listen to their stuff from the late 40s early 50s--wonderful sound and as you can hear RG had a great voice --that whole musical era from the end of WWII to the end of the Korean Police Action was so rich in talent and diverse in style...

Yes, I've heard the music, but didt' know The Weavers. No excus, I lived a sorta "sheltered" life.
Hubby, of course, new ALLLLLLLLLL about them. I asked him this morning...lol! My "education of patti" continues...
He's working for Ronnie Milsap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a30R_drH2GA
And James Montgomery...hmm. I met James many times...nice guy. Hubby brought home bunnies from James Manager many years ago.

Been one of my favorite bands for a couple of decades. Eric Burdon was the real deal...Chas Chandler did pretty well with that guy Hendrix too, huh? :)

This one?
WiT,
I think not, I'm pretty sure the one I have is from the Seeger era, and perhaps with a tad more vigor. It's the only one I've heard so far that I like better than the Animals rock version (though i haven't listened to many of these yet).
