Quotes from my grad school professor tonight include references to:

"Rice burners"

"Kamikazes"

"Orientals"

"Jap with a camera"

Cute. I guess it's cool since no Asians in the class. I figure spear-chucker would have been used too if no African-Americans were in the class.

He mentioned in a prior class listening to Rush Limbaugh earlier in the day. Big surprise.

NB: This is a school curriculum class, so don't ask me how the references are relevant to the course. Maybe my rice burner GF can explain it to me. I think I'll bring her to class tomorrow.

It'd be funny if it wasn't so impolitic! You've got to wonder about this guy.

I already did. I am rarely at a loss for words. I was dumbfounded.

If it happens again, he's going to get called on it immediately.

I emailed him the following after I got home from class. I think I was pretty reasonable.

"Dr. XXXXXXXXXX,

You're a goodhearted man. I had you in class before and think highly of you. But I need to express my concern about the comments tonight.

You reeled off the phrases "rice burners", "kamikazes", "Orientals", and "Jap with a camera" in quick succession while telling a story tonight. You are too good a man to let yourself be so casual. Just because there are no Asians in the room doesn't make it any less offensive.

To me it's personally offensive. I've been in love with a Korean woman (born in Korea and now a naturalized citizen) for a couple years now, and honestly I'm surprised I didn't walk out of the class or correct you in front of everyone. I suppose I'm mellowing with age. But I found it incredibly offensive. It made it impossible to pay attention after that point because I was just pissed.

I'll assume such comments are in the past and I'll see you Monday.

Chris"

Good for you, homeless, for having the cajones to do that. Hope he takes it in the right spirit.

He emailed back and apologized, so good for him too.

How old is the guy? That might have something to do with it - not an excuse, but perhaps an explanation of sorts.

I'm assuming "kamikazes" was used to describe Japanese persons in general; otherwise, IMO there is nothing wrong with using it to describe those Japanese military personnel that were on suicide aerial missions during the latter stages of WWII.

He's about 60. Explains it a degree; I thought that. If he's that "old fashioned" he should get out of higher education or have a filter when instructing.

But one thing I didn't mention is halfway through his list he said "maybe I shouldn't go there" with a smile...I said "yeah, maybe not"...and he reeled off the other two. He knew better.

Each term was used to describe people that made the Mazda he bought way back when.

Yeah, he should've known better regardless, but I'm not surprised that he's about 60, instead of say 30-40.

I agree. He apologized. Contrary to what many might guess about me, that's all it takes and it's in the past for me.

MedialMeniscus - Thanks for posting the clip! That scene was exactly the first thing to come to my mind when I read this thread. I actually saw Back To School when it first came out 25 years or so ago at the last drive-in on Long Island!
