View Full Version : Underwear or No Underwear: That Is The Question

So I've heard that going commando (running with no undergarments like compression shorts or boxers) when you run makes you run faster. Sometimes, compression shorts restrict my movement, so I can understand how they could be detrimental to racing performance; what I want to know, is what you think! Do you prefer to run with compression shorts, boxers, or nothing at all?

you're a loser if you run with boxers. compression shorts when it's super cold so as to protect your balls. i'd be astonished if i ever heard of a good runner who runs with boxers on though. maybe if you're a stupid freshman with a tiny dong and you think the older, hot girls will see the little thing flap around

In terms of running shorts, what is the difference between "built in stuff" and "bare to the bones" poll options? I freeball is all my running shorts, that what this built in lining is for. Voted "built in stuff."

Well, some shorts don't have any built-in lining, so you would be totally bare to the bone with those.

When I do easy shakeout runs I tend to wear basketball shorts with boxers, but for training runs and races I use running shorts with the built in. Compression shorts in winter always.

My racing shorts have built in stuff so I wear nothing with those. I tried compression shorts a few times and never really liked them. So commando or built in stuff.

I'm gonna start wearing shorts with built in stuff, and no compression shorts and see how it works for me. I've worn compression shorts for years tho

I wear compression shorts but during outdoor track I realized they weren't very comfortable, so I may try commando during XC. Our shorts don't come with lining though.

All of the shorts I have bought have the "built in" liner that other people have mentioned. I have freeballed on some occasions, but I tend to always wear spandex/speedo under my shorts.

speedo? never heard that one b4. i guess it could be convenient if you wanted to take a swim after, or run through some puddles :P

My own, nice running shorts: nothing
Crappy school uniform shorts that I would only wear on relays (I wear half tights or a speed suit individually): compression shorts
(I'm a sprinter)

Its actually not that bad. But I do get weird comments when I tell them that I was running in it.

there's no reason for multiple garments. you should wear either running shorts with nothing underneath or half tights with nothing over

i bet...i hate how in relays, everyone has to have the same color compression shorts...SO ANNOYING

This, I usually wear half tights in races, but when it gets real hot out I cant stand them so I go with the shorts with the liner. For trainig: shorts wth a liner during xc and outdoor, but during indoor when we have to do our long runs outside, I go with sweatpants with compression shorts, can't freeball in the new York winter

Wearing compression shorts UNDER your running shorts? Why? I did that as a freshman in HS and got made fun of all the time. I did it because I didn't like how short the shorts were.
You left out a MAJOR choice in your poll. Where is the briefs option? I personally wear briefs under my running shorts any time I run. I didn't have to until 10th grade. I freeballed and just used the liner in the shorts I'd run in since I was 6 or 7 and by the time I got to 9th grade all of a sudden my balls started hurting. Went to the doctor the night before state qualifiers and after some super awkward tests and an ultra-sound it turns out the chord connected to my nuts was super inflamed from all the bouncing in my baggy liners in my shorts. Had to wear a jock-strap under my shorts in my race the next day hahaha.
Also wearing running shorts for underwear ftmfw.

qfe I hate that. Or that your compression shorts have to be a solid color

I thought I was the only one that wore speedos lol. I do wear them if I'm going for a swim after a workout but I feel like them do keep me a little warmer in the fall. But I do love compression shorts; my adidas powerwebs are my favorite. They don't make me faster but I like the way they feel

fwiw, one of my teammates ran a 14:52 in the 5k as a freshman in college last year and I don't think he even owns running shorts other than for the uniform. The same goes for one of my HS teammates who ran 15:05 last year, also as a freshman in college.

I freeballed for the first time in a race a couple days ago. Felt pretty good. I think I'll stick with it. Going commando for practices is just as nice, but it's a bit of a hassle to change every day after school. Weekends = commando now though.

if compression shorts restrict your movement during a long run, either they're too tight or you have really really weak legs...
that being said, if im just straight running, shorts with no underwear. if im doing a workout that involves sprinting, compression shorts.

Have made the switch to built in. Works well.
