Time to RUN FAST ALL:cool:
These are my predictions that I copied from another thread.
The EMASS D2 should be very wide open for the last 3 spots, same for the last 2 spots in EMASS 3.
In EMASS 1 there are a lot of teams who could grab 1 of the projected 5 spots (includes WC).
EMASS D1: 4 teams...Brookline, Lowell, Andover, TBA
EMASS D2: 4 teams...Mansfield, TBA, TBA, TBA
EMASS D3: 4 teams...Whitman-Hanson, Oliver Ames, TBA, TBA
* Also, 1 wild card team who must finish 5th place in one of these divisions (most likely this will come from D1).
WMASS: 3 teams...Northampton, Amherst, TBA
CMASS: 3 teams...Shrewsbury, Wachusett, St Johns (s)
Total: 19 teams, 50 Individuals, 183 runners

i think 9am is too early to start the biggest race of the year. some teams will need to be on a bus at 630am or even earlier.
my opinion/solution:
either split the sites with d1 d2 and d3 going to one spot and d4 d5 d6 going to another or start the races an hour later...of course, the real solution is too just go back to 4 divisions :)

Was that the western MA. site before Northfield? I remember going to a golf course for AS in 1979.

Forgot this was on the usatfne site. Need to get that 1981 reference changed. There was an unofficial state meet that year because the MIAA had declared no AS competitions in any sport that year for some purification of sport reason. 1981 unofficial race was at FP and I took part with BLS finishing 10th as a team.

i think 9am is too early to start the biggest race of the year. some teams will need to be on a bus at 630am or even earlier.
my opinion/solution:
either split the sites with d1 d2 and d3 going to one spot and d4 d5 d6 going to another or start the races an hour later...of course, the real solution is too just go back to 4 divisions :)

In some ways I like the Olympic trials better than the Olympics. Its always exciting to see who wins, but the real drama is for third place (remember "the dive" in the 800?)
The EMass meets are kind of the same. To win is prestigious, but the real drama is for fourth because its the difference between your season ending or not. Flawed as it may be (and I also would have rather seen the old four division alignment stay) the wild card extends the suspense even further.
So here's my Girls D1 preview (assuming relative health among the teams):
1) Weymouth, the Bay State champs have been alternating as the top ranked large school in the state with LS and Wachusett, are clear favourites to win. They have two potential top five runners in Corcoran and Jaklisch, and are solid three through five. I think they are the only school with a lock on an all-state berth from this division, because after this the other teams all have blemishes.
2) AB, the fourth place finisher at the DCL meet, has a top five runner themselves in Davis, and a potent #2 in Zambarano. They are also very good through four and will stay close to Weymouth at this point, but then the bottom drops out with a 5th somewhere close to 22. If however there has been recent improvement in the fifth, then things could get a little more interesting for the top spot.
3) Newton South. At the beginning of the year I thought they might have trouble making the AS meet, but the growth in their youngsters leave them looking pretty good. O'Keefe will battle for the D1 title with Peabody's Rocca and Andover's Mullins and put a really small number up on the board. After that veteran Laurence will lead a pack of novices, all of whom should crack 21 minutes. They were only 15 points behind AB at the DCL meet, and at a bigger meet like EMass they may exploit AB's fifth enough to even rise to second.
4) Haverhill. The MVC champs have a top ten runner in Solimine who will drop a single digit on the board, and will still be close to NS and AB through three. After that they start to lose some ground with their 4th and 5th with both trying to break 21. They could also rise depending on how the young 3-5 of NS handle a big meet like EMass.
waiting for the wild card is the MVC runner-up Andover. Mullins will challenge for the individual title, and they might be slightly ahead of AB, NS, and Haverhill after two, but after that they steadily lose ground on their 3,4, and 5 to Haverhill.
Other teams to consider: Lowell, Lexington
The individual race in D1 will be the best girls race of the day. Predictions:
O'Keefe, Mullins, Rocca, Davis, Gillis, Corcoran

1) LS, the current top-ranked large school team and DCL champs have the defending individual state champ in Keklak to lead things off, and perhaps the best depth in the state following her. They might put their first five under 20, and all seven under 21.
2) Franklin, the Hock champs look to be a solid second. Ross will push Keklak up front, and when joined by Giese and Hagen may have the best trio in the division, and may lead LS at this point. Their fourth and fifth however drop to near 21 and they'll lose a lot of ground to LS in these spots. Their lack of depth may have left them vulnerable in another division, but D2 looks to be the thinnest of the three large school divisions. They might even concede to LS and rest Hagen for the AS meet.
3) Billerica. They have a decent runner up front in Aline but after that the next four runners hover around 21. Hard to believe that will lead to an AS berth, but I don't see anyone else on the horizon.
4) Chelmsford. Has a talented freshman in Ali Wood leading the way and a #2 in the mid 20's. They should be leading Billerica after three but then their 4 and 5 drop off to the high 21's. Still, with a good showing by the caboose they could take over 3rd. They'll be pushed by Needham who appear to have an almost similar makeup in their team.
Other teams: Needham. anyone else?
Individual: Keklak, Ross, Giese, Hagen, Crowe, Wood
Am I missing someone?

While I'm looking forward to seeing how Weston does against HW in D5, if you watch one girls race this day then the D3 team race is the one to watch. For the title it is between Wellesley (large school #3) and CC (#5), and the coach's poll has Whitman-Hanson (#12) and Notre-Dame (#13) battling for the fourth and final spot. The biggest name of the day may be CC senior Kerry Nix.
1a) Concord-Carlisle. I'm going out on a limb with the DCL runner-up because I like depth. They don't have any of the highly touted names of some of the other teams, but they are good enough up front with Jessie, Ratcliffe, and Kimball-Katz, all of whom will probably go under 20, to stay close in the beginning. While they will probably be a little behind Wellesley after three, maybe even four runners, their fifth will give them the edge in a large meet like EMass and they'll carry the day. They passed both Weston and AB on the fifth runner at the DCL's.
1b) Wellesley. The Bay state runner-up have a very strong front contingent with Kaliski, Fouda, and Lauer, and stay strong with their fourth. Based on the Bay state conference they appear vulnerable at the fifth however, so the question is whether they can build up a big enough lead after four to hold off the CC charge.
3) Oliver Ames. This is the division of league runner-ups, with OA taking second behind Franklin at the Hocks.
4) Whitman-Hanson. I don't know anything about this team, but the polls have them ranked side by side with Notre-Dame Academy, so look for a battle for the the last spot.
Other teams: Tewksbury starts off really well with the clear favourite in the individual race in Patriarca and middle distance star Toland. but drop off badly to 23 by the fifth.
Individual: Patriarca, with a pack behind that will include Fouda, Lauer, and Jessie.
Thoughts?

A big jump in the numbers in the D5 boys race. Why didn't they even the teams out more? Put some of the larger schools in D4 and the smaller ones in D6. Other then that...seems like the races were pretty even, numbers-wise. given that D1-2-3 races had much smaller fields
(128 D1 girls vs about 190 in D5+D6 stands out) I'm pretty sure equal fields were not the MIAA goal.
I prefer the 4 div format. Yesterdays format has watered down the quality of some qualifying teams. For example I'm looking at D6 and you've got some boys at 20 minutes, some girls over 24 going on to AllStates. Under the old method with HamWen, Weston, Westwood, etc in the smallest Div and that situation isn't so bad.
just my opinion

Westwood was in the old Division III. 20+ boys and/or 24+ girls were also part of qualifying teams from Division IV in 2006, 2007, and 2008 (throw out 2009 due to the weather).
That being said, the new format did put 2 extra (and slower) schools from the smallest division into the Open.
Every advancing squad had a team time between 1:22+ (Pembroke) and 1:28+ (4 schools) with the exception of Ipswich, Norwell, and East Bridgewater (all 1:30+ and from Div. 6).
If we apply the 4 division format to this year's results, I believe the following would have resulted:
Div 1: Lowell, Brookline, Methuen, SJP and A-B still advance, W.A., Chelmsford and L-S finish 6 - 8 and do not (although the A-B, W.A. score would have been real close)
Div 2: Mansfield, OA, W-H, Walpole and Gloucester still advance; the change in format has no effect on this division.
Div 3: Pembroke, Feehan, Sandwich, Medfield and Marblehead still advance; Westwood does not
Div 4: H-W, Newburyport, Seekonk, ORR, and Ipswich still advance; Norwell and E.B. do not

The PVIAC pays for our access to TrackCentral and then we use it for all of our entries and results through the season. When we have our conference meets (as well as some of our local invitationals) we use TrackCentral to do our entries. It is also where our conference top times lists are formed. From a coaching standpoint, I like the TrackCentral interface a lot as there is a lot I can do with splits, courses, and historical comparisons for our teams.

Div1 and 2 and Central Div 1 Become All State A Championship

Top 5 teams from each Div (15 teams) and top 10 from each division non-team participants=135 individuals per race for All State A and C. All State B would be 175

It was at Berkshire Community College, not Country Club. It was a decent course that was essentially two big loops with one smaller loop in the beginning. From a spectator standpoint, it was unreal. You could see nearly the entire race. I thought it was challenging both because of a hill that was run 3 times and a number of turns that were pretty sharp. From what I understand, Northfield will be available next year and we are heading back there.

When there's a kid who runs 16:52 and doesn't qualify... but there are kids who don't break 18:00 and qualify... there's clearly something wrong.
Different races, my friend.

Three All State Championship meets, each at the top of the hour....
Div1 and 2 and Central Div 1 Become All State A Championship
Div 3 and 4 and Central Div 2 and West Div 1 Become All State B Championship
Div 5 and 6 and West Div 2 Become All State C Championship
Top 5 teams from each Div (15 teams) and top 10 from each division non-team participants=135 individuals per race for All State A and C. All State B would be 175
This would add on one more hour to a great racing day. Let's face it, with over 3,000 athletes running in Regional meets, no reason this can't be done.
Last year each race was about 147 or so.
Let's hope not. The race is already watered down and I think that affects competition all the way down the line. The divisional meets afford teams the abilty to compete in a big post season meet. After that we should be trying to get the top teams and competitors in the most copetitive situation possible.
Even last week I think the competition suffered with the 6 divisions. While FP seemed slow because it was alittle wet I'm not sure it was as slow as some of the races looked. I think that was a direct result of the size of the fields and their competiveness.

I like the idea of however many guys you can fit on the starting line. It makes championship races more exciting and certainly more competitive. While I do feel like a championship race should have a bit of exclusiveness involved because those teams earned their spot, I think no matter who went the best team would ultimately win.
Now it appears that Gardner's starting line is full so I think this is going to be a pretty exciting day full of races.

Gardner's starting line is more than full. I think it will be 2 across in a box.

I'd much rather see a single all-state champion than three. This is going in the wrong direction.

Thanks for responding, I was feeling totally ignored. I posted the suggestion in response to many who complained not enough quality teams were going to states.
In my opinion the only way to get a true all state meet is to add one more week to the schedule, which is done by either running the Saturday after Thanksgiving (so as to not conflict with football and the holiday on Thursday). Or begin the championship meet series one or two weeks earlier in the season.
The chief complaint to adding one more championship meet is that athletes would be running 4-5 weeks of hard meets in a row.
Originally coming from NJ, I took a look at their schedule and found that is what they do, running conference/league meets the last weekend in Oct, sectionals the first weekend in Nov, State group meets the second weekend in November and concluding with an all groups meet the third weekend in November. Some teams then continue on with the national meets. So, it can be done, but at what expense?
I like looking at NJ because in a lot of ways they are similar to MA, with a more dense population perhaps, but similar coaching philosophies and makeup of the state.
My guess is that there may never be a consensus on this, as some will think it's too much racing at a high level, while others would like to see a true state championship meet.

Why on earth would anyone want to be like NJ? The smart ones get out.

I don't think adding another weekend of championships or further splitting the field at all-states are viable options.
As far as adding another weekend of championships, it's been explained in other threads how we can't move the date of the regional meets earlier due to SATs (in the context of joining the New England Championships).
And further splitting all-states, at least in the way you described, doesn't seem to make much sense either; two out of the three races don't include teams from the whole state, and it's no longer split based on school size. If there were going to be 3 separate races at all-states, then Central and West would have to be split from 2 to 3 divisions, as well.
I agree with Oracle that moving towards more championships isn't the right direction; each field becomes diluted, and winning the meet means significantly less. They don't need to have more teams at all-states; 16 teams per division is enough to ensure that the teams that are capable of winning wind up in the race.

Well, it certainly sounds like status quo is the way you want to go, which is fine with me. It seems to me that if we don't explore any and all options, then we get what we have, sort of like our government...
As to the SAT tests, that is easily solved (in my opinion) by racing on Sunday instead of Saturday. Strange that other states don't seem to be affected by this issue. Is that because MA is the only state that has SAT's on that date?
I also thought the new divisions were based on school size, so maybe I am not understanding this correctly.
As stated earlier, my original post was in response to a number of comments saying that some quality teams were left out of the state meet as a result of allowing more small school teams to participate.
My college background of the NCAA having 3 divisions probably had something to do with my original thoughts.
Anyway, just some thoughts to bounce around...

I couldn't tell if that post was sarcastic or not, so I'll play it safe and say SAT dates are nationwide.
That being said, I don't think it would be a huge issue if the MIAA raced the state meet on the same day as the SATs. Most juniors aren't going to take the SATs that soon. The earliest they take them is the December date for the most part. As for the seniors, the November date is rarely used for athletes. There are dates in January, March, May, June, October, November, and December. January interferes with the regular MSTCA coaches meet, March doesn't interfere with any big meets. May interferes with the meet in Andover and MSTCA coaches, June is AS, October is the Bay State Invite I believe, and November MSTCA/ possible state meet. December has no conflicts. That being said, I think athletes, with advice from coaches, could make it work. Taking the SATs in January, March, October, and December are all possible options where the athlete isn't missing many important races. And in all honesty, with schools putting less importance on SAT scores, the runners that will be running at AS and the larger meets aren't going to need stellar SAT scores to get into the schools recruiting them.

I agree with this. Many leagues have moved to tri-meets to reduce the number of races. Adding more would be counterproductive to optimal racing, imho.

I wouldn't add another week of racing, I was suggesting that the current two all-state races be combined into one championship race. The issue is that less teams might actually make it to the AS meet depending upon how large a field is acceptable.
I also in agreement with most of the posters that we should have stayed with four EMass divisions instead of having six.

4 Divisions if definitely the way to go. Like Greg Hardy said earlier, there is a huge gap between what made AS in D1, all other divisions, and D6. Four division would solve this problem.
Last individual qualifying time
1. 16:50
2. 17:23
3. 17:21
4. 17:07
5. 17:35
6. 18:04

I'm not a big one for caring about individuals qualifying in cross anyways - it's a team sport. Another answer would be a seperate the teams and individuals.
As far as the 4 v. 6 divisions in EMASS - there were a total increase of almost 200 competitors. While it may have been OK this year with proper distribution, eventually if the trend continues there would be a need to go to more divisions. While I was a strong opponent of going to 6 it may be that I was just resisting change and not having the foresight of others that there is a steady increase. I would still debate that the numbers last year showed that but this year it seems that they do.

I agree that whether there was enough data available to warrant a change to 6 divisions is debatable. There was no real spike in the numbers over the decade prior to last year. I've always wondered if the 2009 D4 race was the spark.
While the 42 complete boys teams and 294 total boys in 2009 D4 was the first major increase in years, there was actually more unseen data. There were in fact 48 participating schools, and at least 2 more which entered but chose not to attend due to the rain. 50 schools meant the possibility of 350 runners in D4.
Sure enough, had there still been 4 divisions this year, the numbers would have jumped to 50 participating schools in D4; 312 total runners and 44 scoring teams.
There is no doubt that the smaller schools are now coached by women and men who want their athletes to compete at the state level.
Also, this year is not the first for 6 divisions. EMass had 5 divisions through 1966, went up to 6 divisions from 1967 to 1972, back down to 5 divisions from '73 to '81 and then dropped to 4 divisions starting in '82.
Concerning the 74 second difference in individual qualifying between D1 and D6: in 2007 the difference between the final D1 qualifier and the final D4 qualifier was 80 seconds. It happens. Instead of writing about it on a message board, why not approach your ADs with potential solutions to bring to the MIAA. One suggestion might be to follow the same model as Connecticut (which has 6 divisions as well): the top 5* individuals from each division not on a qualifying team plus the 20* fastest overall runners based on time beyond the automatic qualifiers (*CT does 12 and 30).

While that would definitely be a good idea, it can't accomplish that much while there are two separate all-state races. I don't think they'd take spots away from one race and add them to another race, but it could achieve some parity between divisions 1-3 and between 4-6.
