I take it upon myself to start the tracktalk skiing thread now that dyestat has died. We honor those who came before us by fighting for what is right and by continuing to talk meaninglessly about the best sport ever made on snow.

Very true! Had my first faceplant/blood spilled of the season.

Anyways, has anyone else experienced knee pain from skate skiing? The inside of my knee hurt a little bit before the race, only when skiing and walking up stairs, but it hurt significantly more during and now is terrible. I can't really put any weight on my left leg when it is bent and probably can't ski for a couple days. Any advice, other than icing and ibuprofen?

Yeah you looked pretty rough coming across the finish line.

I felt some pain in about the same area of my knee today when I was out skiing, not sure if it's from skiing though. You can always try various stretches to lessen the pain or find the exact problem.

Probably slight tendinitis of the knee (Most likely Patellar tendonitis, or Jumpers knee, this is just an educated guess. Though on a more serious note could be a MCL or LCL tear, highly unlikely, but still possible). I wasn't there and from this basic description it's what i can infer from my medical knowledge. Basically, to help recovery and prevention, R.I.C.E (Rest Ice Compress Elevation) make sure you form is correct usually biggest reason for injury. Also, make sure to use tylenol, won't make you bleed out, unlike Advil and Motrin. That's more for concussions, but whatever. Also, make sure when you wrap the knee with an ACE bandage to leave the patella open so you don't create swelling, and loss of circulation. Elevate above the heart too, to drain the blood from the area. Get Healthy soon Jan.

I am going to guess a stretch / sprain of the knee's medial collateral ligament due to repetitive valgus positioning if the knee while under load. (knee is canted inward - knock-knee position - this causes a stretch to the medial collateral ligament referred to as the MCL) Jumper's knee (patellar tendinopathy) or pain anterior / inferior to the patella (Osgood-Schlatter's disease) would affect the front of the knee, not the inner knee. I doubt that you'd have a problem with the medial meniscus because poor skating technique is likely to put more load on the lateral meniscus. :)

Another malady that could be affecting you is pes anserine bursitis. Scroll down this document to read about it and see a picture depicting its location.

http://www.aidmybursa.com/pes_anserine_tendonitis.php

edit: I found this which pretty much backs up my theory, based on the physics of skate skiing, of a medial collateral ligament sprain.

Common Cross Country Skiing Injuries

Hip and thigh

Thanks! I talked more with my school's trainer, and it is probably just a sprain like you said. She thinks it either came from skiing on the ice snow a few days ago, overuse, or my weird fall during the race (I was bleeding on my left hip and was covered with snow on the right side of my face???). It still hurts a little bit, but I haven't learned to be cautious enough to skip Mesabi!

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR SECTION AND STATE NORDIC SKI RACING MEETS

SCORING PROCEDURE
The team score will be determined by totaling the points scored by the top four finishers in the pursuit event. The first-place finisher of the event receives the full value of the scoring base. Each successive finisher shall score one point less than the previous place. Each team member will hold his or her place in the final standing. In case of a tie, the skiers share the value of their positions. The team with the highest overall score shall be declared the winner. All skiers shall maintain their individual ranking. Teams with fewer than four (4) finishers shall be included in the team point totals. At the State Meet non-team qualifiers will ski only as individuals and will not be included in the team scoring.

On the MSHSL website, there are only 8 girls and 8 boys teams listed in the results from last year

For all you high school (or older skiers) skiers out there, unfortunate news that another MN college has decided to cut its ski team. I would like to encourage everyone to sign this petition (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/csbsjuskiteam/)in support of saving the St. Johns and St. Bens teams. Losing these programs makes skiing as a whole weaker in the state, and it further narrows the options that people have if they want to ski in college. It sucks.
