Running just a handful of days after a marathon win Jag's 47th place in the team scoring (56th overall) run is just beyond superlatives.

Whoomph, let's just say 6 days is not enough for the legs to fully recover from the marathon and generate the muscle force for XC 6K. The hills and final kick were rough. I gotta give credit to my teammate Mason for giving me somebody to focus on. Now to fully rest up and recover in Ireland!

Jag, I've got to say I was surprised to see you raced again so soon, and I'm not surprised the effort was more uncomfortable. Where will you be going in Ireland? Anywhere near Nenagh? (It's county Tipperary (sp?), not too far from Limerick.) That's where Johnny Hayes was from. He won Olympic gold in the Marathon in 1908, and there's a statue of him there. Have a safe journey and good training weather while there!

WiT,
I'm willing to take your word on the problem...though I might tease you about it! (no need to cite).

Yeah, I signed up for the XC club stuff a month ago and Dallas a week later. Ideally, I would NOT do that (and I don't recommend it to anyone!), but I have nothing else to do from now until mid-Jan.. Lots of time to recover. It was fun running with a team for the first time in 10 years!

You are correct to chide me. I was aware but failed to follow up. Things like this are the reason my MofthePG seed dropped from seventh to 10th-not that I am campaigning or anything.

Oddly enough, I'm not completely surprised -- it seems counterintuitive that someone could run a good XC just a week after a good marathon. I am so much slower than Jag that the difference is best measured by calendar, but a couple years ago I had a good AG marathon and week later a good AG XC (somehow I got roped into being on a masters team that ran against the Div II/III college kids at a big fall race). At the XC, there was zippo pressure as I had the marathon in my legs and nothing was expected of the race. And as I was running against college kids I was almost in last place at 1 mile despite running my fastest mile in a couple years (I don't spend much time sub-6:00 these days). But with the marathon training, I knew that any pace I could hold for a mile or so I would hold for the whole 8k. Sure enough, I passed a few slower college guys on the last loop, mainly guys who went out too fast and probably consider 8k a long distance. I was still in the last 25 or so, but I felt it was a good race.
Still, I don't think anyone would recommend running a marathon a week before a goal XC race.
Congrats Jag. You're clearly in fabulous shape. Somewhere Arthur Lydiard is happy.

I've had the opposite effect where after a long race, anything of 10+ miles, any race the next week is just awful, despite having a good aerobic base. Not enough recovery for me, maybe.

we randomly walked out of the after-party together. i was pretty irresponsible at that point (my teammates were goading me into getting the southern accent out, which happens when i'm drunk), but i remember this moment of greatness.
i love randomly running into people i know vicariously through the internet.

Yep, I beat a bunch of those people over the rolling hills in Twin Cities. I'd say anyone who ran sub 2:39 over a hilly course last year is a legit runner.

Camille,
Nice job today! I'll let you give details.
BTW - In looking at results, I saw Uli Bromme's name. I was confusing her with a young lady from one of the private schools (I think in MA) who was racing well in maybe 2003 to 2005. Can anyone tell me who I'm crossing her up with?

Yeppers, just finished 2nd in the MS Blues Marathon in 2:41:26! I had a last minute change in race plans, and decided to give the marathon another go. To be honest, I think 5 weeks was plenty of time to recover from Dallas, and I've seen a drastic improvement in fitness the past month (drop in pace for progression runs-- legs feel really good and springy). I've done mostly good mileage and very few hard workouts (3), due to weather/vacation/travel.
We had a very competitive field for such a small race ($$$$), 4 women who had run 2:38-2:43 the past 1 1/2 years (plus Ethiopian Atalelech, who's consistently around 2:43-2:45). Me and another 2:38ish American, Russian (DNFed), Kenyan, and Ethiopian. Also, triathlete Uli Bromme, who's a 2:50ish marathoner (yes, I think I heard her mention living in the Northeast- New Jersey?). I did my research on all the runners, and anticipated Truphena going out hard and dying badly.... this time she did not die (probably cause she went to Mexico to train at high altitude)! This course was byyyyyyyy farrrrrrrrr the hardest I've ever run, any distance! I can't even imagine a harder course..... relentless, sizeable hills! The old course had 2192 ft. of elevation change.... the new course has more than that because of the added hills in the middle and more turns too! For comparison, Twin Cities has ~1300ft. and NYC 1400ft. of elevation change. I think everyone underestimated the difficulty of the course, going out at a regular marathon pace and having huge positive splits. We had a pack of 4? women through 5-6 miles at a steady 5:58-6:00 pace.... Truphena and Atalelech took off after that, and I let them go (anticipating them to come back). I caught Atalelech, but not Truphena-- she had too much of a gap (ran 2:40, vs. my 2:41). It was a tough judgement call to let them go early, but given the difficulty of the course I thought they'd kill each other and dig a hole. In hindsight, if I'd kept Truphena closer I think I could have outrun her the last 10K. I was the only person from sea level in the top 5, as the sea level Russian DNFed. The conditions were cold and windy (strong headwind the last 5-10K), but I'd say it was pretty close to ideal for a marathon in the Southeast.
In terms of recovery, this is the best I've ever felt after a marathon! I think 'in the moment', the hills are very very difficult on the legs/maintaining pace, but because of the varied muscle usage it doesn't lead to as much post-race muscle soreness/damage. I did a cooldown after the marathon, so that helped get rid of the rigor mortis feeling. My friend Bridget ran with me yesterday, and said my legs looked springy! I could even go up and down stairs, no problem. Dallas was much more problematic with quad soreness (not good for XC racing, d'oh!).... the body seems to be learning how to recover though after MS! I'm getting ready to drive to New Mexico for high altitude training, so it's a good week to recover and travel.
I appreciate the support from y'all. Hope you can refrain from sharing the excitement on the Letsrun message board (not-so-nice people over there, although I know I have a supportive following! Thanks guys! :)).
Also, I'm getting ready to start a website when I get settled in New Mexico. I'll keep you posted. For now, you can follow my day-to-day activities in Facebook! Cheers! :) jag
