Some big props to Lake Zurich and rightly so.

I don't like Nick Gornick as 5th man of the year. I think that whole pack needs to be recognized for what they did all year just like NV's was last year. No single guy on York was a consistent 5th guy, and they all had good races and bad races. This isn't to mention that if Hedman hadn't been disqualified, Milling would have been their 5th guy. I think Milling actually deserves it a bit more, as he wasn't expected to be a top 7 guy coming into the season, and he came up big in the state meet.

I don't know who else you would give it to though. Usually the 5th man award would just go to whoever the 5th guy on the winning team was. That's a little silly, but it is what it is.

I agree that the York pack might have been a better pick...but then again Gornick may have been their 5th guy most meets and thats why it was him getting the award. In 2008 Herbert for NN won it and his was their 4th finisher at state, but had been their 5th man all year and his stepping up to 4th was one of the keys to their state title.

I haven't read the team predictions except for what was talked about in the thread, but I'm going to guess that all the MVP's are state champions and team-related awards go to team champions. All underdog awards go to Lake Zurich. I'll edit after I read through it all.

Read everything but boys 3A. My predictions are:

Lukas for RoY
Someone from LZ for most improved
Most improved team = LZ
5th man doesn't count
Coach of the year = Newton

After: 2/4, was almost going to put down LZ's coach over Newton. Totally forgot about Mcasey, but that was well-deserved.

Thanks for link. Isn't Jon Macnider, girl's 3A COY, the son of Jim and I thought it was Jim, the boy's coach @ Schaumburg, that was retiring. If it is Jim that is retiring and not Jon the son then this is poor reporting.

If you're trying to be funny then you are not.

Coach Jon is the brother of Jim (Boys coach). Jim retired from either teaching and/or head boys track I believe. The younger Macnider is Kirk. Kirk is Jon's nephew and Jim's son. Kirk is the girls coach at Hoffman Estates. Kirk would be a great candidate to take over the Schaumburg girls in my opinion.

Jon is retiring at the end of the school year.

You are correct. I got my Macnider's mixed up. I apologize and yes, it is good reporting. Speaking of reporting it might be good to do a story on them as they have contributed so much to the sport.

The Macnider's have been covered like a blanket.

After looking over the awards, who is Pamela Deery? She got the award for class 1A coach of the year, and if i can remember correctly I never saw a women coach at any of the beecher meets. I was always under the assumption that their coach was the Nykaza's father. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I believe that they have 1 head coach that covers the boys & girls program and it's Pam Deery. Nykaza is an assistant, I believe.

I believe... No. Actually, I KNOW (being from the Beecher area) that Pam Deery is not their coach. On paper she is, but I can promise you that Henry Nykaza deserves that award. He has consistently improved those boys over the past 6 years to bring them to this point.
