Let's get the discussion going about the upcoming Cross Country season. Who are the top teams? Individuals? What is the most competitive division?

You can check out the divisions and who moved up or down from last season on my blog at www.crosscountryexpress.com

The word is spreading...

I am curious as to your ranking of Valley Christian in front of Sacred Heart. The loss of Bergman is going to be big for VC. SHC has a great grouping of young runners which tends to be more beneficial in training and team scoring. Also, Monterey finished a few points behind SHC in the CCS meet. You may want to keep an eye on them as the season progresses. With the addition of Santa Cruz to D3, it is going to be tough for a good team to make State. Just look at Gilroy last year: finished 3rd in D1 and 4th in the CCS and stayed home. This is going to be a competitive year.:D

Well Josh Small (VC SJ coach) did those rankings so hopefully he can get on here and explain those rankings. As for Bergman, she graduated in 2009.

You can also check out Walt Van Zant's CCS comparisons at the following link. He has VC SJ 2nd, Santa Cruz 3rd, SHC 5th and Monterey 6th.

That may have been a reference to Amy Bergman, Jennifer Bergman's sister.

I was referring to the ranking quote that Bergman moved to Texas. I assume this is VC's #4 returner junior "Amy". Also, in rankings by Walt Van Zant, the team time is the determining factor not over all placing in a race of all CCS D3 runners.

If this was done, I see Santa Cruz winning, with St Ignatius and SHC battling for the 2 remaining coveted spots. Aptos 4th, Monterey and VC close to Aptos. This is just based on returning athletes. Aptos will figure in the mix if they can convert an incoming freshman, which is extremely likely.;)

The end of the season will tell who did the requisite training. After all, that is why we run races.

There seems to be a large number of CCS teams searching for coaches. Any news on positions being filled?

I know Chris Puppione is the new boys' head coach at St. Ignatius.

I have been waiting for the reply but it seems like it isn't coming so I will take a stab at it. If you look at VC their top 3 is better than SHC, probably one of the best trios in D3 right now right behind Aptos. VC has 2 average runners for 4 & 5 in the 21's.

My guess is when you add up all the runners in CCS the top 3 will give them the bump in over-all rankings. That doesn't mean SHC wont get them in D3 though. Look at ND-Salinas: They got beat by Santa Cruz, but where ahead of them in the rankings. Could we have a repeat of something like that? Maybe, maybe not.

I don't think it will be as close as you think. My bet is we will have a rematch of 2008 & 2009 and the same teams will duke it out, with Santa Cruz playing spoiler. One runner who has a bad year or gets hurt will kill any one of the 6 teams in the mix. But like you said, that is why we have races.

My D3 Pics:
1. Aptos
2. SI
3. Santa Cruz
4. VC
5. SHC
6. Monterey

The wild card for the girls teams are the incoming freshmen who can have an immediate impact. I think we will be able to find out pretty early in the season what teams struck gold with freshman talent.

Check out the Middle School Ram at Westmoor HS on Friday, September, 24th.

Additional information here:
http://www.dyestatcal.com/ATHLETICS/XC/2010/ram_jr.doc

We (Crystal Springs Uplands School) host a relay race (4 runners each run a mile) at the Crystal Springs Course on Tuesday, September 21st. Email Dave Robertson at drobe@csus.org for more information.

The following is not CCS but worth the drive since it's on Saturday. Along with high school competition, Castro Valley also hosts a middle school and coaches races.

Additional information here:

Hopefully others will chime in. I know there must be more opportunities that take place more toward the souther end of the CCS area.

Santa Clara County have an East Side County and West Side County that has a structured season, league and county championship. Also there is the Lynbrook XC Invites which most west side schools and sometimes aptos attends. It is after the east's county meet and most coaches don't want to go the extra week.

Hi everyone,

I've started a new blog covering elite T&F called Spiked Up, Psyched Up. I'd appreciate it if you could check out the site and give me some comments on it. Thanks a lot!
