It is pretty much their national sport too. I would guess that talent rarely goes undiscovered. In the US, I would guess, on the conservative
side, that for every Solinski or Rupp there is a person who never tried but could have excelled. Too many other activities to participate in. The sprint events do not have much of a problem with this since most organized team sports are quick twitch focused. Just my 2 cents. Not sure if it is right or not.

There was an interesting piece on Patrick Makau in the recent Running Times. The reasons Kenyans are fast is because of altitude and it is their national sport. But, one of the best marathoners in the world grew up in western Kenya, not at altitude and he is a beast.
