The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is epic! If you have time I recommend the complete book (its over 1200 pages). If not, the abridged version is pretty good as well.

My 3 favorite summer reading series...

The Dresdan Files:
http://rtmulcahy.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/n204971.jpg

Codex Alera:
http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n45/n225659.jpg

Sword of Truth series:
http://i41.tinypic.com/2a6wd9z.jpg

I guarantee you if you read at least a quarter of a book from any of these series (and have a nerdy side) you will fall in love as much as you did with the harry potter series (assuming you liked those). Each one of these series are wayy better than HP.

  :D

I'm reading the Halo books just for fun right now. They're not bad.
I recently read Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. It's very nerdy and suspicious of government, but so am I. I liked it, and it's legal to download it for free.
If you want a bigger/deeper/higher quality book suggestion, I recommend Contact by Carl Sagan.
and... if you haven't read the entire Ender's Game series, and its shadow series, you're missing out.

Post books you're reading, just finished, or about to start.

Suggestions/questions/discussion also encouraged.

I'll start:

Yesterday I read Sub 4:00 by Chris Lear. It was alright. Light literature, but I'm a sucker for running books.

Now I've just started Memoirs (Confieso Que He Vivido) by Pablo Neruda. I'm amped to read this...Pablo Neruda is my favorite poet and such an interesting writer.

My planned next book is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

There are a lot of books that I've been reading on and off for a while and have been meaning to finish. These include:

Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky
The Metamorphosis by Kafka
The Tibetan Book of the Dead
Sculpting in Time, the autobiography of filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky

And I recently purchased Don Quixote but I don't want to start it until I've finished the above 4. I'd like to start spending more time reading, especially now that I've graduated college and will have a crapload of free time for the rest of my life. Usually all of my would-be reading time is taken up by watching movies.

Just read two books on Lydiard's training.

Might start reading WoT series again, but I heard it kinda sucks from like 8th book on (which is where I am at).

Another option is the Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas, I really enjoyed The Three Musketeers back in high school so that's worth a shot too.

Last option is to not read and come up with more ideas for a story I've been thinking about writing, that kind of counts as reading right?

And let me know if Don Quixote is any good.

Rework by Jason Fried

And rereading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis for the millionth time. Maybe I just have a dark sense of humor, but I think Patrick Bateman is the funniest character ever in literature/film. A lot of people are disturbed by the movie, but I laugh the whole way through it. Great satire.

I wouldn't say it is necessarily a tough read, it just depends on how you approach the book. It's written using a lot of slang words, and can be discouraging I guess if you don't pick up on what they mean immediately, but once you do it makes the story that much more enthralling.

I have not read the book but while watching the movie for the first time it is definitely very difficult to understand a lot of the dialogue. I'd imagine with the book it would be easier because you can take your time studying it and figuring out what it means.

A clockwork orange is not a difficult read. Just print a sheet of the unfamiliar terms for referral. It takes no time, and I like it better than the film.

So, any good books I'm supposed to be reading over the summer? I'm about to get The Forever War out of the library tomorrow and get cracking. Also, I'm debationg whether or not I should just go ahead and buy The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo looks really lame. I bought it expecting some magic or other interesting stuff, but it focuses on these really old detectives and tirelessley bores through excessive descriptions. I quit after the first chapter or two, though.

I recommend this book to absolutely anyone. It's such a fantastic fiction read that keeps you glued to the page for hours. One part near the end may bore you a bit for 1-2 pages, as well as the few paragraphs about the war, but they tie the story together.

I'm also in the middle of HP und der Stein der Weisen, but stopped reading it for a little while because it was taking too long, and I wanted to read other books.

I have read tons of books this summer, and see no signs of slowing down.

The Outliers
Blink
The Tipping Point
The God Delusion
On The Road
The Drunkards Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives
Stumbling on Happiness
The Catcher in the Rye
The Old Man in the sea
The Great Gatsby
And A Summary of Hegel

Books on the to read list:
Slaughter House Five
Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs
Join Me
The Brother's Karazmov
The DaVinci's Code
and many more

edit: Malcolm Gladwell is my new favorite author, you should read all of his books

Just finished Blink this past weekend as well. So was rating Blink a good or bad book a snap judgment for you? ;)

The whole idea of judgment in that short amount of time is absolutely crazy! Really makes you think. However, after reading the book I decided I want to learn FACS more than anything else so I can read people.

Just read Blink after a recommendation from my dad. Interesting read. Might go after another one of Gladwells' books.

Also knocked off book eight in the WoT series, so moving along there.

Need to eventually tackle The Count of Monte Cristo, but I keep finding other books to read before it.

Try The Fountainhead.
It was then made into a pretty decent movie with Gary Cooper.

The Fountainhead is possibly my favorite book, top 3 without a doubt

In the past 3 weeks between my lit and history classes I've gotten through The Sorrows of Yong Werther, On the Genealogy of Morals, Civilization and its Discontents, Marx-Engels reader, The Origin of Species, Chekov short stories, Colonel Chabert, Eros and Civilization, some John Stewart Mills collection, and a couple poetry collections (Romantic and British WWI poets). I picked up Mastering Mule Deer at a thrift store yesterday and read about 2/3 of it yesterday while I was baked.

-Freud is a fantastic writer for a psychologist
-Marx-Engels is eye opening, makes you see how negative society has turned the concept of communism/socialism
-the origin of species is a major let down, because its no longer revolutionary and we know all it has to say
-Mill is such a good read, makes you think a ton and he is very interesting, although I disagree( I am personally a deontologist/kantian )

My 3 favorite summer reading series...

The Dresdan Files:

Codex Alera:

Sword of Truth series:

I guarantee you if you read at least a quarter of a book from any of these series (and have a nerdy side) you will fall in love as much as you did with the harry potter series (assuming you liked those). Each one of these series are wayy better than HP.

  :D

I LOVE the SOT series! I'm currently on my second read-through. I'm in the middle of Faith of the Fallen, which is my favorite of the series, and it never gets old.

Haven't heard of the other two series, are they as good as the sword of truth series?

is most excellent.

I read Slumdog Millionaire, aka "Q&A". I liked it, but I actually preferred the movie. The books ending was too easily resolved for me.

These books always looked interesting to me. I've had an itch to read them, but they're on a long line of books waiting to be read.

finally reading Once A Runner, so far it is a great book. After hopefully i will read The Perfect Mile since it has been sitting on my bookself for like a year and a half

I'll say it again, Once A Runner was poorly written. I had to force myself through it. I enjoyed The Perfect Mile much more.

Just got "Why We Run: A Natural History" & "Strides: Running Through History With an Unlikely Athlete"

Will be starting both soon
Also, reading a James Patterson book currently, as you can usually catch me doing...Yay summertime for more book reading

I have an undying hatred for James Patterson. He used to write novels, now he just pitches ideas and lets other people write them. You ever notice the second author's name on the bottom of the cover? It's just a smaller font size than his. Did you know he owns the exclusive rights to release a book on Mondays? He has a new book out every month or two because he doesn't write them anymore, he just tells people what to write about.

i just read:

am going to read next---

haven't read Ice Hunt, but I've been reading the Sigma Force series. I read all the books leading up to The Last Oracle. I started it last fall and got too busy with school and xc to finish it. I leave for Vermont tomorrow and am bringing 3 books with me. These are my choices...

2008 Best American Travel Writing
The Last Oracle
The Lost World
The Book of Lost Things
Kite Runner

I'm bringing Last Oracle because I've already started it, I read Jurassic Park last year and have been meaning to read the sequel, but I've also been meaning to read Kite Runner too. But I looooove travel writing and The Book of Lost Things looks great too.

I've read and heard it was really good. But a lot of what turns me off to books like that is that it's in our Young Adult section at work. A lot of those books are aimed towards 13-16 year old girls, like the Twilight series or the Pretty Little Liars series. I realize some of the books are quite good though. Harry Potter is in our Independent Reader section which is for kids 7-12, and I loved those, so maybe I can give it a go. I'm just always hesitant to buy books from those sections.

I selected The Last Oracle, Best Travel Writing, and The Book of Lost Things for my trip to Vermont. I hope to AT LEAST finish Last Oracle.

So I read about about half of "Slaughterhouse Five" in the library the other day, didn't check it out, put it back on the shelf with a page marked and figured no one would check it out, and if they did I would read it in a few weeks when it was returned. I go today to read it again, it's gone. I look it up in the catalog and it's not due back until THE END OF NOVEMBER. I'm pretty furious, students can't check out books for that long and this is absolute bull****

Just read Jury of One, Personal Injuries, and Fantasyland. Jury of One was by far the best, even though I guessed the ending halfway through the book. Still, all the plot twists kept it interesting. Personal injuries was meh. It was a legal thriller, but it was a little too legal for me to get into it. Fantasyland's a niche book, but even for a fantasy baseball nut like me it wasn't that good

The Girl who Played with Fire
The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest
Poisonwood Bible
The Weed that Strings the Hangman’s Bag
Grapes of Wrath
The Bridge of San Luis Rey
Stotan
The Lonely Polygamist
Possession
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Angela’s Ashes
Slaughterhouse Five
The Shack

Just finished The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly.

The first 60 pages or so are really slow and lead you to think it's gonna be a book about psychological issues a boy suffers after his mom dies. I was very, very wrong. The book develops very rapidly once a certain event happens and I could not put the book down.

Only three books have made me cry.
Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows
The Five People You Meet in Heaven
The Book of Lost Things

I got teary eyed a few times reading this book from different scenes. I highly suggest it.

I'm supposed to read it for school, but it's not for a particular class, it is just something that the teachers told all incoming seniors to read and said we'd have to write an essay for it....but the thing is.....not all people are going to "english" classes and the ones who are are going into different ones. This summer I read:

Jane Austen - Mansfield Park
Jane Austen - Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen - Persuasion
Emily Cassel - Post Grad (my sister won it, I needed something quick to read)
JK Rowling - HP and the Deathly Hallows
JK Rowling - HP und der Stein der Weisen (I'm almost done with it)
Haruki Murakami - What I Talk About When I Talk About Running
Charlotte Bronte - Jane Eyre
Emily Bronte - Wuthering Heights

And I just started Anna Karenina. I'm fairly certain I missed a couple books, but that's most of them. I love Jane Austen, so I finished up her books.. and working at Barnes and Noble means I buy way too many books when they're on sale - and the B&N Classics table is always having sales, so I've been working my way through that. Jane Eyre was easily one of the best books I have ever read.. it was seriously incredible. I didn't enjoy Wuthering Heights as much, but it was interesting seeing the very close similarities between Heathcliffe and Snape.
