Fleet made it in the mile. Derrick got into the 5k. I'll be pulling for Derrick. He's had 2 weeks since his 13:49, maybe he can get top 3 in a slow race.
I'm curious to see if they put all 20 3k guys on the track at the same time or if they split it up like they did the 18 team DMR in 09. It will be tough to split into a "fast" and "slow" heat because less than 4 seconds separate 2nd and 20th.
Predictions:
60m: Demps
200m: McQuay
400m: James
800m: Loxsom (Samoei and Greer close for 2nd and 3rd) The 800m final will be the 3rd race of the weekend for all 3.
Mile: Toss-up (Batty, Hlaselo--he's even older than Batty, Masters, Foster)
3k: Centro. I might take Heath if he were fresh and had a better history at nationals. If Chelanga goes from the gun and runs a 3k commensurate with his 10k, I don't think anyone can hang with him. That rarely happens at nationals, though.
5k: Same deal as 3k. Chelanga's chances are diminished because it will be a moderate pace early on. This is a tossup between most of the guys with top 10 marks.
60h: Riley. I wish Nugent would win, but he's been a bit banged up.
4x4: Baylor. They will have the freshest team, except for maybe LSU, and, more importantly, they are the kings of the 4x4.
DMR: Oregon. They'll split about 2:56-7, 47, 1:48 then Centro will do whatever it takes to win. He, Lalang, and Bayer will be the only fresh anchors of the top 6 teams. Lalang could shake things up, but I think Centro is a pretty savvy racer.
Field: I'm too ignorant about most events to comment intelligently. Henning will win the WT, Finley will win the shot, Florida will rack up a ton of points in the TJ.
Florida should win this meet by a mile.

Things I am immediately interested in:
- Heath 3km/5km/DMR? ... wish we could see who else they have declared for the relay
- Will Fleet make the mile final? The more I think about it, I'm not even sure why he accepted the spot as Oregon won't be in it for the team title, and the mile prelim/DMR is notoriously tricky - especially for a guy who is coming back from a long break. Centrowitz is the cream of the anchors but there are some other pretty damn good guys you don't want to give a couple seconds to.
- M3km should be a dandy. I think McCarthy is coming along nicely and, as he's only running the one event, is in a position to do something.
- W3km is also interesting, but as Van Dalen is the only one who won't be tired she doesn't really have an excuse for not winning.
- Villanova v. Oregon would be a hell of a DMR if they were both fresh, but as Oregon's entire team will be doubling back and Villanova will be fresh it should be pretty clear cut. No way Oregon runs the posted lineup as Kesselring is theoretically a bit better than Hasay over 1200, and Hasay is a couple seconds better than Kosinski in a mile even before you take into account Kosinski coming right off the 5km. I don't know if that's supposed to be mind games or something, but hopefully nobody is dumb enough to buy it.

I think Derrick actually has a better shot off a relatively quick pace (i.e. <13:40). His strength is obviously his strength and hopefully that's what they've been working on over the last couple weeks; it will come around relatively quickly for him. His footspeed is pretty bad even when he's at his best, and he got outkicked by a bunch of nerds at Husky. If it's really slow on Friday, he's going to get lit up.

Ortho, wow it is sick we are thinking alike
I thought exactly the same thing
Derrick would not fair as well right now in my mind off a donkey like pace and blazing finish, has not had any underside races, nor can he be that sharp, altho he is tough, not sure he would beat even his own team mate Heath in banger's race. Not now.
I am a little surprised that Heath is declared for 3/5 and probably would be their best bet on DMR, no? I would be surprised if he goes DMR as he is now declared for 3 and 5? he is good but ain;t no Rupp.
Another great point you make which I kind of already had mentioned, the Mile/DMR double is especially tough and then to come back next day to run mile final?
You have to go so anaerobic in mile pre lims and then jack it back up for DMR?
Then go to the well again next day? I would not have any athlete thinking he had to go twice to the max on same day anyway, unless he was Rupp who really manned up big time.

Derrick has run 3:42.x which is better tham some of these guys though, altho has not done anything like that lately.

Ortho, something I also thought you might get a kick out of since it is one of my pet peeves I think as well, as we agree on absurd conversions, I think?.
One of the marks in the DMR for them no longer needed to be used was NM 9:32.x at alt. What do you think that conversion "down" was from? I think it is a bit much? I think they gave them almost 8-9?
That is hysterical, plus I heard they moved the track UP 10 feet to get the extra? :D

I'm excited to see the 5k. After that monster kick by Heath, it'll be interesting to see if he can hang on to Sammy C. as their completely opposite tactics (supposedly) arise.
If he runs like that again, no one will touch him over the last lap or 2, but if chalenga drops it with a mile to go....who knows.
Also the 800 and mile will be fun, as the 8 is always a clusterf*ck indoors, and the mile is soooo tight as well
edit: also the 400, do we still have the #1 & 2 in the world so far at this meet? It was that was as of SEC's but idk now

Like I said--it's Florida's to lose.
Based on the form chart, 9 of A&M's 26 points come from the 800m. Probably the largest percentage of points his team has ever been projected to score from the mid-distances on up.
therunner12, is Alleyne coaching Preble and Roberts? Also, what happened to y'all's jumpers this year?

With the MD talent TN, Mich and Oregon has, I am surprised they have not run sub-11. Oregon for example has a 4:35 miler, 2:04 800m and a 53x 400; TN, Mich has similar talent.

I reckon for Stanford's DMR, they'll have Berberick on the anchor as he's not running anything else. To do otherwise would be pretty dumb as Stanford isn't going to win the DMR - even with Heath, they're not going to win the meet or come anywhere close, and having Heath run would just ruin their DMR's chance of doing anything and ruin Heath's chance of doing anything in the 3km. Does listing him on the relay help Derrick get in as Heath is already in the meet?
Re: the mile prelim/DMR double
It can indeed be a bitch, especially if you are in the first heat or something and come through in 2:08. Smart people will just go to the front and run 30s to avoid having to close in 1:26 or something stupid and wrecking the legs for the DMR four hours later.
Derrick has run 3:42.x which is better tham some of these guys though, altho has not done anything like that lately.
And you can be sure it was 59.9-59.9-59.9-44.9 or something along those lines.
Hadn't heard that, but it is hilarious. 8-9 sec doesn't surprise me and fits pretty well with the theme of absolutely stupid conversions. If you figure the 400 guy actually gets a bit of help at altitude it's, what, 3 sec for the 1200, 2 for the 800, and 4-5 for the mile? Considering I've heard of zero of their guys, it should be fun watching the carnage Friday.

I never understood despite being told guys do not want to lead, why guys just do not go and run their even 4:00-4:01. It gets you to finals, EVERY year, instead of taking the wait and sprint way, where even the best could get pipped at the line in photos

It certainly didn't hurt, but the reason they listed Heath is because you have to declare the team that ran the Q time. Once in, you are able to make substitutions (either with guys you bring on your own dime, or with guys already in the meet in other events).

Well, there's always the fear, rational or not, of being a sitting duck and towing the whole heat along only to have them roll by you at the end. It's true that if you are in the "fast" heat, 6 out of 8 runners can make it. That's pretty good odds, I'll cede you that. Bear in mind that a lot of these guys got their national berths in races where they followed and did little work at the front. Also, it's not like a ton of high-quality guys have been cut down in the prelims the last few years, so I don't know if the risk is as big as you think. For a marginal qualifier, doing all the work at the front for a sub 4 or 4:01 and then finishing strongly might not be within their abilities. I don't know enough from experience if an even sub 4 race taxes you more than 2:07-1:56 one, so I can't be sure whether it makes more or less sense for the top guys in the field. Also (I'll be a smartass here), if you get pipped on a photo and lose by less than .01 for a last spot you get in anyway(see Centrowitz a couple years back).
Much as I love the DMR, it does really muddle up any predictions or discussion of events after the 5,000. Heath and Chelanga should be a good battle in that 5,000, but I'd tend to favor Heath against Chelanga who seems to struggle in races where he can't get away. 3000 looks like a good spot for Centrowitz against a lot of guys doubling back from the 5. I wouldn't overlook Ben Blankenship though as he's been running very well, nor Ryan Hill and David McCarthy(as ortho pointed out) who both will be fresh. The mile is wide open. I really like Van Ingen at least making the podium in a surprise.

I'd be psyched to see Centrowitz win the 3000. His after his 3:36 two years ago he got cut down by injury and last year was, of course, the year of Andrew (with Acosta finishing like a house on fire and grabbing second I know) but it just didn't seem Centrowitz had it all together last year.
Hopefully, he'll put it all together in '11 building towards 2012. I don't see him going to Korea this summer but hopefully he'll run USATF, make the final and get in the mix preparing for the Olympic year.
He's still young and I think as he grows in strength he could really make some leaps forward. He's poised, seems to position well, isn't afraid to be the first guy to move and has good finishing speed. Tactically, he's savvy - give him a few more years to grow into and who knows?

He did make the finals and get 5'th at USATF last year(first collegiate and just .01 behind David Torrence). His performances were pretty much all very good before that, so I think he did have it all together- he just didn't get into the right race to run a low 3:36 like AJ did, for example.

I agree he did really well last year and I remember he ran @ USAs. For some reason it just looked like he was missing a little of the spark he had the year before. I don't remember if he had some niggling injury issues last year or not. Hey, I could be wrong, too - goodness knows it happens often enough. Either way, I know pretty everyone considers him a talent and it should be awesome to watch how indoors ends up and outdoor unfolds.

Fair enough. I think that 3000 race is pretty intriguing. I could see any of six or seven guys taking it, which should provide for some nice viewing. Unfortunately this not being a part of the Visa Champ. Series, we're probably not going to have Tim Hutchings as a part of the coverage.

That's cause tracks all about the team. In cross country all I want to see is Sam Chelenga layin' the smackdown on the rest of the field regardless of how far ahead he is. I could care less about team scores. After the first place finisher crosses the line, all cameras should be on him, and botched interviews should commence.

No, it's really not. In fact, track is one of the least team-oriented "team sports." It's a shame when the focus is shifted away from event winners and towards all the also-rans.
You [and CBS] have it backwards . . . so much so that I'm not sure if you're trolling me or what. Cross country is much more so a "team sport" than indoor/outdoor track and field.

I have to believe there's some type of honest effort rule, so that you can't DNS in a team-scored meet (and theoretically keep a rival out of the meet) and then compete later individually. Whether that is enforced only for future individual events or he'd be out of the DMR, too, I don't know. Someone here probably knows. I'd have to assume that it applies to relays too, so he has to at least start the mile if he hopes to be in the DMR.
Either way, it wouldn't have made any sense for him to declare if he didn't intend to race the mile. Oregon is not in the team hunt, and he had a spot in the meet as it was.
EDIT: Thanks KevinM

The 800 is a really tough event to pick, so I think he was kind of grasping at straws to pick that one. Seems weird that he's narrowed it down to the top two seeds (Greer and Preble) when there are another 5 within two tenths of Preble including many who qualified a month ago and guys with 1:45 or 1:46 outdoor marks(Primm, Loxsom).
For the mile, I can't fault anyone for taking Batty considering the time advantage he has on the field. It's funny that he touts Batty's "experience" as a selling point because that would be something that I might hold against him. This is his first national meet, so his class year and age might be irrelevant at this stage. I like Van Ingen, Casey, and Gibney to be in that top 3 or 4.

Could've seen this one coming.
Even entering him in the mile was a huge tactical miscalculation. Oregon's DMR could potentially set the CR ... or you roll the dice on a guy who barely got into the meet and the DMR could end up 3rd. Not to mention this guy you're overracing is just coming back from a broken foot that required surgery. The best interests of the athletes are definitely winning out over trying to squeeze that trophy bonus, eh Vinny?
I did not see either race, by Fleet 4:08 or Greer 1:54.x

Greer ran his last 200 in about 32 seconds, so it's debatable.
Fleet got dropped with a couple laps to go, but didn't really shut it down, just kind of kept running and didn't kick.
Why even enter the meet, if you're going to do stupid bullsh*t like this?

not really sure what was going on with Oregon men this weekend
They try like heck to get Fleet the Q'er despite the fact that he had to run too many efforts on a just surgically repaied foot and had to be short on training.
Then they double him up, he is way off in Mile, and flat in DMR
Then they run Greer who surely looks like something is either major league wrong or did not try , one or the other, then after a 1:54 they do not even come back with him on 8 in DMR, surely his 32 second last 200 in 800 gave him enough of an interval?
They are only 1.3 down in DMR and Centro loses a show, and did he drop the baton also?
Puskedra runs 14:0x looking like he should have a drum and fife in his hands?
Maybe Centro redeems a bunch of this with a 3K win? A couple guys went to well in DMR and 5K last night.

Huh?
Just finally getting a chance to look at some of the results this past day, and I don't know if anyone has said this so I apologize if so, but whoa was Andrew Bayer flying anchoring that DMR! 3:53, extremely, extremely solid. If January '10 was late last year, then yeah. He ran 3:58.98 indoors last year. Obviously 3:53 for 1600 is still a great result. But this kid has run 3:57y and 7:48 for 3K so not completely unsurprising.

Without having seen these races I don't know whether to love these results or hate them for the folks lost to the finals. Wow.
Brutal qualifying in the men's mile. .34 seconds separating the first 7 runners in heat 2 and only .68 separating the heat 1 winner and the 7th place non-qualifier in the 2nd heat. Several articles I saw said Casey did not have much experience running in crowds at this level, guess it showed.
Men's 800 loses Loxsom, Greer, Evans and Primm in qualifying?? Ouch.
Oregon men DMR . . .
I hope McQuay's hamstring is ok for the 400 but I imagine that's doubtful. Too bad. Can't wait to see James though.
At least today we have an Epic battle between Claye and Taylor coming up today in the triple. 3K should be huge as well. Men's mile should be awfully competitive as well.
Can Hasay win the mile after a 4:39 heat and a 4:30 DMR anchor??
And best of all, after the meet we are that much closer to outdoors!

Greer, if LRC is to be believed, was vomiting all day. Their freshman on the DMR actually performed pretty well in his place. Declaring Fleet seems kind of baffling after he ran 4:08 in the mile and wasn't close to qualifying. Looked like a pretty passive race for him on the 12, too. Great race for Hassan, though it was probably one of weaker groups of 1200 guys in some time. For Oregon, if Centro keeps the shoe on and runs well, in spite of Fleet's lackluster leg they still have a shot at everyone in that race.
By the way King, if you wanted to see why guys don't want to lead the mile heats look no further than Patrick Casey. Someone on LRC said he was under the weather, but he did work at the front for 1500 meters only to be run out of the finals by an entire heat that just pounced on him. Jeff Thode who took it out in the first heat just barely advanced after spending most of his heat leading or right at the front.
Huh?

He broke it last indoor season pretty early, but he's said that he was only a 4:30 type miler as a junior in high school. It's been a been a pretty incredible progression for him. Best stat on the DMR is that Lawi Lalang got the baton in second, ran 3:56.96, and lost three places.
I'm impressed with Estrada running 13:29, many guys who go on to have good pro careers don't run much faster in college.
I guess after day 1, the favorites are Samoei then Preble in the 800. Batty then O'Hare and Hlalselo in the 1500. Too many to list in the 3000.

I never understood despite being told guys do not want to lead, why guys just do not go and run their even 4:00-4:01. It gets you to finals, EVERY year, instead of taking the wait and sprint way, where even the best could get pipped at the line in photos

Patrick Casey is a horrible example, he really had not beaten anyone big, and his time was way over inflated due to conversion
What he realized and correctly was, that any time Q'er had to run faster most likely than 4:02, he guranteed that , but not really at all by that much, and could not finish the job.
he hardly "lit out" after it he was 2:01.90 going by, he had right idea execution was not very good, should have been by in 1:59-@;00 flat max to lead and see if anyone would come at that pace.
At 2:01.90, he surely was a sitting duck, that is just a bad job, it is not fast enough to really spread anyone out, and too fast to just lay in and slam late in like 54

I can confirm Greer was sick. Not much you can do about that. Still think running Fleet in the mile prelim was a stupid idea. If fresh, he could've bossed the 1200 leg (even on the comeback trail, he did split 2:55 at UW) and given the freshman 800 leg a bit more margin for error. Not that any of that mattered once the shoe came off. Oh well.
Puskedra was clearly hurt. Another 'sh*t happens'-type thing, but I'm not sure why he'd even run in the first place. Outdoor NCAAs is in three months - so if you're hurt or just coming back this time of year, I don't see the point of taking a chance at the JV meet and maybe setting yourself back. Indoors is such an easy season to bag, in my mind.
The 3km is either going to be really good, or just infuriating. For guys like McCarthy, Centrowitz, Hill who are relatively fresh - they need to make it HARD. If not from the gun (certainly not the best tactic for guys who can close like McCarthy or Centrowitz), then definitely strapping on a huge pair of balls and running a 60 with 1200 to go or something, make guys like Korir, Chelanga, Blankenship, Estrada, Lalang, Heath, Darling, Bayer et al think about how hard they ran last night. If I was a guy like Connor, or Tully-Doyle I'd just start running 63s from the gun and try to pull something off.
Also, king was spot on about Casey's not-too-hot/not-too-cold 2:02 split. That's not going to do anything. Surely a "3:54" guy can come through in 1:58-9?

Well, he hadn't raced anyone this year, but he was 3'rd last year at NCAA's beating many guys and he ran 1:47 for the 800. Obviously he didn't execute well, but it really is harder than it might seem. That's the point, it's not that it can't be done it's just that it's very difficult to pull off. For the top guys, it's probably more difficult than getting top 3 or snagging a time q'er. For everyone else, Casey or worse, no one's going to help you and you will get jumped hard the last 150 by a bunch of capable guys. At 2:01.90 or 1:59.90 for 809m I believe he is a sitting duck either way. All of these guys ran 3:58 to get in, so I don't see why they'd give him any ground if he comes through in 2 flat and cede one spot. He ran 58.8 the last 400- really not that bad and he judged his effort and that's probably why the 409-1209 split is mediocre, but all of these guys are good and it's easy to chase and pounce.

I still agree that running a good solid heat making sure you time qualify out of the 2nd (or any later) heat makes sense and I agree that Casey didn't execute and I've certainly posted that I don't buy his "3:54" altitude mile (with conversion).
I was merely pointing out (poorly) that middle distance runners so rarely seem to have the courage to do what certainly could be done and simply sit and kick assuming that TODAY will be the day that my kick will be there.
Weak humor to be sure.
Too bad to hear about Greer and having just watched the ESPN3 reply Oregon definately was in it when Centro got the baton. No shoe lost and he is right in there.
What black cat did Oregon cross on the way to the meet? The one under the ladder where they spilled the salt? Lannana was quoted earlier in the week in an article about Kosinski that things never work out the way you expect in track . . . perhaps he was reading the future or knew only too well how many of his guys were off as well . . .

Since you got your panties in a twist, I'll do the really quite elementary thinking that you seem so loathe to do.
He's wearing a compression sleeve. If he had a stress fx/rxn/tendonitis-type thing they would've taped much lower down. Just looking at photos, you can be 99% sure he has a bad calf. Seeing as how he hasn't raced since January, went straight to the back (atypical behavior), and ran really slow - it's also not a stretch to conclude he's missed a fair bit of training

Miller Moss of Clemson wins scoring just under 6000 with Klech in 6th and Beach in 13th.
Can Klech become a decathalete? Shot put of 35-1/2" and pole vault of 13-9 1/2" I think could improve pretty easily and his long jump of 24-1" is shorter but a few inches than he jumped in high school.
Give him 36' in the shot, 14-1 pole vault and 2 inches in the long jump and he's 2nd place give or take a point - all very realistic. Should be very interesting to watch him outdoors to see if he tries a multi . . .
Considering what Beach was in high school I would have thought he'd be furthur along . . .

Why does ESPN have so much bias for the SEC? They would not get off that Florida dude Hlaselo's D during that entire race. Same with other races, like Nugent from LSU in the 60 hurdles.
Florida is looking good for the team title, maybe that's why they keyed on their guy?

Would have been awesome to get updates on this, or any of the field events, during all the downtime. They keep showing the empty track with no sound when there are clearly things going on in the infield and the throwing area.
