Weather was awesome, apart from a few times that the sun broke through the clouds early in the race. It rained for like 5 minutes tops, and there was a nasty breeze coming off lake superior. I had a long time to judge because I was out there for a while.

Don't know who it was, but she put a serious hurt on Hauger over the last mile. Hauger had her by quite a bit after the first loop and I think she beat Hauger....

Well, you know, Conner is bigger than Tyler (not that that is saying much considering Tyler's size), and some might argue that he looks older...;)

But, seriously, you know what I meant. In all liklihood, if an Olson (other than Alec) makes state this year, it will be Tyler (unless they both make it, which is possible...)

Remember, though, that Conner isn't even the fastest 8th-grader in the state. Shane Streich was faster in both CC and Track last year, and I think he is a (very) darkhorse candidate to win A State. I'd say that next season (2011), the freshman Streich should be one of the favorites to win State, Musa or no Musa.

Another interesting thing to note, speaking of Musa, both Conner Olson and Shane Streich were faster than him in 7th grade...

Well, depends on how you define "around." I'd say he's a tad bit over 5'10", but not near 5'11". He's probably about an inch taller than Tyler, and both look like they've been deprived of food all their lives.

They are both very impressive times, but you do have a point. Conner's time is downright rare. But one thing I do know is that he is already training more than 95% of high schoolers, which I think is very dangerous. It's bad enough that Tyler will run 1,100 miles this summer as a senior, but Conner will probably clear 700 as an 8th-grader, and they are both so frail that I don't understand how their bodies can take it.

I could say more, but this is all I will say. I've probably already said too much. You all can probably tell that I'm not a fan of high school althetes training like this.

I'm sure that in East Africa, students are being encouraged to skip school because the ten mile walk/run from home to school is too far. I am sure that world class swimmers are being encouraged to swim less so that they won't be too good too early. I bet that piano prodigies are being encouraged to cross train on kazoos. (sarcasm is intended)

Gerry Lindgren was able to handle significantly more and had a pretty good career. In the 1960s and 70s lots of runners were out dabbling with that kind of mileage and having great careers. My thought is that each athlete gets to decide what is fun and what is not, what is productive and what is not, what is too much and what is too little. If they are truly running that much, they must love running a lot and are out there exploring their own limits. To use a word from a high mileage era... Cool!

Well, who's to argue with Bill Miles? ;)

Don't get me wrong. I'm just afraid that kids like Conner (the early bloomers and high achievers at a young age) who have gone their whole lives being told what a talent they have and what incredible things they can do, and intaking all this outside praise, will start to think that if they don't remain on their podium all the way through college, they will consider themselves failures. I'm just a freshman in college, but I've already seen it far too often, and it breaks my heart. I'm sure that all of you have seen it too. In fact, I almost fall into that category myself, even though I've had a high school career that most students could only dream of. And my only offenses were not improving my place at State in one event and not winning state in a relay. Expectations can wreak havoc on people who can't handle them, and not even I could handle them.

So, I guess it's not really the workload itself that bothers me, its the expectations that come with it. I don't know, maybe I've got their motives all wrong, maybe he just does love running that much and he doesn't really have expectations for himself.

Not going to question the veracity of those numbers, but that's a lot of freaking miles (whether you just love running or not).

I checked my log for the summer before my best marathon and between 6/15 and 8/10 (roughly the summer training period), I hit 510. That is with many 18 plus mile runs.

Maybe these young men can handle that mileage, but I know it took me a long time to build up to that mileage before I could do it without breaking down.

I wish them the best!

I read his book about his high school training and it is an entertaining read. However, given his exploits over the last 40 plus years, I think there might be some shens in there. Not withstanding his AMAZING performances in races. He is just a bit less than trustworthy to believe some of his recounts of his training runs.

Of course that is just my opinion, I could be wrong!

Wow, that's a fringe D1 time, and while winning by a minute... and a 5k pace of 16:12. That time is something special. If he runs like that all season, he'll be the undefeated State Champ. I just hope he doesn't burn out early.

I like what you're saying. "Burning out" is a phrase used far too often in running. The Tarahumara tribe in Mexico (for those who have read "Born to Run") run hundreds of miles daily and don't slow down till their thirties. Humans were meant to run that kind of mileage.

One effect it will have on them is their speed, but I wrote this response having the thought in my mind that races range from 60 meters to 400 miles.

Two Words "Jeff Lindlief"... Won't let him burn out early, it just won't happen. Be peaking for state/post season. If he's undefeated I'll actually be quite surprised. It is very tough to go unbeaten heading into state, especially when you're racing at quality meets.
