So much for Newport. Guess you have to have your school mentioned. What does that do for the Zags though?
Again my knowledge of NCAA rules is limited BUT I thought you had to have camps within so far of your campus?

I'm pretty sure that rule only applies to basketball and football camps.

I'm not ready to deal with having opposite genders overnight together. One less issue to deal with.

Uhhhh In the "Our Coaching Staff" Section it said Jim Smith coached John Murray to "set the Mass. State Record at the 2010 XC State Meet on the Gardner, MA course."
:confused:I hate to burst his bubble but that's just not true...
2010 Results:eek::
http://www.coolrunning.com/results/10/ma/Nov20_MIAA20_set1.shtml
John Murray: 14:04 (VERY Impressive, and I believe best time ever by a CMASS runner)
BUT...
I happen to remember 2 runners back in the day who it can be argued to have been on a completely different level...
1998 Results:eek::eek::
http://www.coolrunning.com/results/98/ma/stb21121.htm
Andy Powell: 14:00 (14:52 5k-Franklin Park, 4:02 Miler, 8:50 2-Miler(i))
Franklyn Sanchez: 14:01 (15:01 5k - Franklin Park, 8:49 2-Miler(i))
'98-99 arguably produced the 2 best HS distance runners MA has ever seen. Period. Murray/Horowitz/Bleday/Collins etc... were exceptionally talented no doubt, but Powell-Sanchez was a wholeee different ball game in my opinion.
300 kicks - Here's what you were looking for in terms of outdoor list, they took down the FP all-time lists/can't find them but I know Powell/Sanchez/Abdirizak are 15low. Will take some digging...:cool:

You are kidding right? They had incredible high school performances but did not go on to greater heights as others who were both hs stars in MA. did i.e. Salazar or even Riley.
Yes you are right about the time but the author of the bio was very proud of his athlete's accomplishment.

Yes that's why I said they were arguably the best HS runners MA had ever seen. Their post-HS running performances did not create the same kind of wow factor and other MA runners have accomplished much more after their HS days than them no doubt. I only meant for the 4 years they competed in HS there is a very strong argument they were the best. The same argument can be made for many others, and John Murray's name can absolutely be put up there with some of the all-time greats. AND we have yet to see how he will grow at Georgetown (which I personally am VERY excited to watch the next couple years).
I was nitpicking, I wasn't trying to de-value the coach & athlete's performances, they speak for themselves and are truly impressive. Just trying to point out there's a difference when marketing a camp between "one of the best times ever" and "The Record". I wasn't trying to discredit or bash the coach, athlete, or camp. I can see where I may seem harsh implying its a lie, because its not a blatant disregarding of the truth. It's just not the down to the numbers fact. It's really no big deal

For what it's worth, Riley ran 3:43.18 in the 1500 which is sub 4 pace and was the fastest 1500 by a prep since Jim Ryun. Powell's best 1500/Mile was 3:49.81.
I don't think you can say Powell/Sanchez were the 2 best H.S. distance runners MA has ever produced. Both of them were extremely talented, but they both benefitted greatly from having the other to race. Riley had the fastest times in country for the 1500, mile, and 2 mile his senior year. If Riley had been born 2 years later, I think he would have posted faster times than Powell and Sanchez and beaten them head to head. Of course, that is all hypothetical speculation and nobody will ever know who was the most talented HS distance runner in MA.
Also, Murray set the D1 All-State XC record at Gardner breaking Barnicle's record. Powell and Sanchez are 1-2 in the D2 All-State record.

Yeah and it is also 7:58 2-mile pace, and 12:23 5k pace. When talking about a mile it makes a little more sense to use equivalencies rather than pace. It's worth about a 4:02 mile.

This is true, I was thinking of the all-time course record.
One thing that makes it hard to compare is weather, percieved effort, etc... Many witnesses who saw Barnicle (an 8:50 2-miler as a junior) that day might have said he was saving some for the more important races down the road (i.e Footlocker Nationals), and only did what he needed to do to win. I think I remember him saying something along those lines to the press shortly after the race. Maybe someone could have been able to say the same thing for Powell/Sanchez? Regardless, if your running low 14 range for GGC, your one of the best runners in the country.

Not to discredit John Murray, because he was a great MA and New England HS XC runner, but I guess it all depends on how you define being one of the best runners in the country.
If you define it as top 25 then he is not, if you define it as top 50/75 absolutely. Again, I tread lightly here, but on a national level our best runners "usually" do not finish near the top. :(

And before someone "jumps" on me and says what about Lampron this year - I was talking XC specifically! :)

Lampron is not the only example and Murray quailies a little farther up than you give him credit for - what was his place in Indoor Nats? Collins? That's just one race this year.
We have had a steady stream of national caliber distance runners in both genders in MA for decades so what you mean by "usually" don't finish near the top is beyond me.

Again- I tread lightly, but I am strictly speaking about men's XC, not indoor or outdoor 2 mile/3200 or 5K races.
John Murray ran 21st last year at Foot Locker, but I think you can agree that because Nike and Foot Locker can not agree to hold their qualifiers on separate days/weekends, both final fields are not as strong as they could be because of it! :(
So, without a real lot of effort/research that the top 20 at Nike were faster than John, which puts him closer to top 50 than top 25.
Again, not "bashing" John Murray, just putting things in perspective on a national level. If you compare our top football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, etc. teams outside of New England, the same can be true.
