lets get some talk regarding cycling. i remember the thread from the stat was great.
post your bikes, jerseys, awesome rides, local freeride parks.
cruiser, recreational, mtn, or road. discuss.
personally i am debating whether i should get a road or mtn. locally there arent much single tracks for enjoyable downhill or freeriding. i could travel 2 hrs to ride diablo but. but if i do make it into the airforce academy, i hope to enjoy some time hitting the trails in colorado. on the flipside the roads are plentiful around here. would like a nice recreational/amateur competitive bike which i could use to cross train and maybe do some triathlons. if you could hook me up with the pros and cons. i could look into some hybrids that have some downhill capability. but bc im leaning towards mtn bike could any one give me suggestions on a bike that would cost less than $1k, preferably closer to the $500. wouldnt mind upgrading later, but the basics are disc, fs, and probably shimano or just good gears. and preferably trigger shifters.

For $500 there isn't a whole lot for either mountain or road biking. I wouldn't suggest getting a hybrid unless you use if around a campus and old railroad beds. I was in the same boat as you with the road vs. mtn bike and ended up with a mtn bike. I would suggest trying both out to see what you like the best. A good tip for buying look for a demo bike from a local bike shop. I got my for $1700 and it retailed normally for $3200.

I would look into getting a Cyclocross bike. You can mix some off road and use it for a few tri races. Look into Redlines as they seem to have a few deals out there. it may be hard to find some at your Local Bike shop for under a 1K. Check out this link for a good starter bikes:http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/cross_bikes.htm
Good deals on Mt. Bikes also! I friend of mine loves his tri-bike from them! Another loves his Mt. bike. Also look towards the end of the racing season as you may find a few good deals on Ebay and Craigslist.

shimano, even SRAM components, much cheaper than pretty much anything else you'll find. I got my bike there and have no complaints.

ive decided to pony up. i love kona bikes, rode a stinky 6 at whistler so i plan on buying a 2009 kona stinky 6 or better. i realize that around me i need a bike that can climb some and charge hills, so freeride is what im looking at. ive been using tetongravityresearch, rei, and other random sites to help assist in the process. i looked at intense, jamis, yeti, marin, trek, specialized, and bc kona is offering a clearance sale, ill go w/ them. i mean i would love to have a yeti asr 7 or 303 rdh but i cant afford a 2k+ frame.

Glacier Freeze- where are you from because I'm about an hour and a half from diablo? other that diablo, plattikill, whiteface and highland in new hampshire, there is little freeride. I believe that Highbridge park in the city about 3 blocks from the armory has some freeride features. Look at mtbr they have some great forums for freeride all mountain and all of the specific companies. If you have any questions just PM me.

Just learned that one of my roommates lives close to some bigwig at TREK. Looks like I'll be hitting him up for a free bike
