I'll try and keep this updated with what's happening in the throwing world.

In the shot put: Americans are a cut above the rest this year. Christian Cantwell recently unleashed a new world best and one of his all-time best throws, as well as 27th all time at 22.35 (73'4"). Cantwell has also been making a pretty penny dominating the worldwide IAAF Diamond series. Recent Auburn grad Cory Martin had an amazing day down at Tuscon in late May, where he popped a 4-foot pr with a 22.10 (72'6") meter toss. Ryan Whiting won the NCAAs shot put with a throw that is currently 3rd it the world, 21.97(72'1") meters, which put him second all-time in the NCAA shot put standings, 3 centimeters behind John Godina (he also took advantage of a down year in the discus and got another 10 points for his team with a win there and a rare double victory). It is going to be a very promising national meet in the shot put, and I'm looking forward to following these guys for many more years.

Discus: The Americans are no-where near as dominant in the discus. Topping the list this year in the plate is the Estonian Gerd Kanter with a very impressive toss of 71.45 (234'5"), which pushes him up to have the highest average of an individual's top 10 throws of all time. Second is Jason Young, an American, with a throw of 69.90 (229'4") meters. Young is the big time favorite coming in to the US national meet, seeded almost 10 feet further than anybody else. But Young may have peaked a little early, having thrown this back in March. So someone like Rome (218) or Malone (215) might have a shot this weekend.

Hammer: The Hammer throw has been pretty weak this year, with only 2 men breaking the 80 meter mark. Libor Charfreitag, who attended college in the US (SMU, correct me if I'm wrong), is leading the world with a throw of 80.59 (264'5") meters. Pulling up second is the remnant of the once dominant Belorussian hammer team, Pavel Kryvitski, with a mark of 80.44 (264'5") meters. Interesting note: Sergey Litvinov of Germany currently has a mark of 78.98 (259'1"). If that name sounds familiar that's because it is a very important name in the hammer community. His father is the legendary Sergey Litvinov, who was an 86 meter hammer throwing back in the golden age. So be looking for some big throws coming from him (he's only 24). The leading American this year is perennial AG Kruger, with a throw of 77.35 (253'5"). Others that will be challenging him are Kibwe Johnson, NCAA weight throw record holder, the Big Man Jake Freeman, and Chris Rohr. Walter Henning might also decide to cause some disruption, coming off an epic sixth round come-from-behind win at the NCAAs.

I love our shot-putters. They compete so much. I feel like they're at every meet I see on tv, whereas distance runners will duck/have light racing schedules.
