Allow me to spare you the hyperbole: Usain Bolt is fast.
He is, as far as we can tell, the fastest human who's ever lived — in 2009, at a race in Berlin, he ran the 100-meter dash is 9.58 seconds. This translates to an average speed of just over 23 mph (with a top speed closer to 30 mph). His '09 performance in Germany was .11 quicker than the 9.69 he ran at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the fattest chunk ever taken off a world record at that distance. Considering the unadulterated simplicity of his vocation and the historic magnitude of his dominance, it's easy to argue that Bolt has been the world's greatest athlete of the past five years. And yet there's an even easier argument to make than that one: Within the next 10 years, Bolt's achievements as a sprinter will be completely annihilated.

I actually just happened to read this article before I saw the thread. I overall really thought the first half was interesting about how fast can humans ever run, but the the part where he mentions PED's and makes a sweeping claim that "people who love track" only care about fast times and couldn't care less about doping and such was a little naive. True track fans actually care about the integrity of the sport and he seemed to be really referencing the casual track fan who tunes in to the Olympics and maybe World Championships. He just made it obvious that he is fairly uneducated in regards to track and field by claiming that nationalism or personal rivalries are not at all factors in the sport. I liked where the article was headed, but found that wasn't as informed as he needed to be.

How fast is fast?

It depends on where someone is in their sprint career.

high school..a sub 10.40
college..a sub 10.30
elite..a sub 10.10

The 10 fastest...

Jesse Owens
Bob Hayes
Tommie Smith
Valery Borzov
Carl Lewis
Mo Greene
MJ
Asafa Powell
Tyson Gay
Usain Bolt

Houston McTear is the king of the woulda, coulda, shoulda. Running a world record 9.0 as a high school junior...amazing! If he'd ended up at some sprint school.....

That 9.0 was 100 yds. not 100 meters. The former is approx. 33' shorter than the latter.

The below is a WIKI excerpt.

Early promise

McTear was born in Okaloosa County, Florida. He recorded an 9.0 mark in the 100-yard dash as a high schooler at the Florida AA High State Meet in the preliminary heats, in Winter Park, Florida, but the world record time was not recognized because it was hand-timed.[5][6][7] The time remains the NFHS National High School record in the now discontinued event.[8] He was the 1975 High School Athlete of the Year, as selected by Track and Field News.[9] At the 1976 U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, McTear ran a 10.16 sec over 100 metres, at the time the fastest ever run under any condition by a Florida high school athlete. It is still No. 3 on the all-time list, only surpassed by Jeffery Demps and Marvin Bracy.[10]

Here's my little story................

I'm in Fresno at that seasons ..WEST COAST RELAYS. The next event on the track the Junior College 4x2 relay. Anchoring for SMCC...Houston McTear. Yep a world class/World Record holder in with JC guys.

At the final exchange McTear is wayyyyyyyy back there totally out of it...or was he? As he started to run the crowd (I doubt very many knew who he was) started to stand as we hear...WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!... one by one he started picking them off. With 10 yards to go he eases off the jets, and...grins. The joint is going crazy. The PA announcer....ladies and gentlemen.....Houston McTear.

Bro, well aware that 9.0 is not meters...ok? Long time sprint fan here...ok?

has a deep list of yearly HS times by class-- see where you fit.

quick look says you are somewhere in the top 200 sophs at 800

After 55 years of watching HS track I have a broad statement
95% of all HS runners are running two events shorter than they should be.
95% of those you see on the line in the HS400 should be in the mile at that meet.

301 listed at 1:59.99 or better, and thats a minimum number I'd say.
