The sectional alignment and division changes are usually discussed passively in the other threads. I was observing the 2011 cross country sectional assigments and decided to record the division changes and also entries/exits of cross country programs eligible for WIAA competion.

Any comments on division, conference and/or sectional re-alignments would bemuch appreciated!

391 xc programs to 390 xc programs, not so simply explained:

In 2010, there were 391 cross country programs in the WIAA and now 390 are listed in the 2011 sectional assignments. The simple reduction of one school, however, does not reflect all that happened :
Mount Horeb/Barneveld splits, Barneveld joins Wisconsin Heights (0)
Frederic and The Hope School are no longer listed(-2)
Milwaukee Marshall and its children schools join Milwaukee Vincent and its children schools (-1)
Eastbrook Academy & Madison Country Day School join the WIAA (+2)Division News:

School (2011 enrollment / 2010-2011 change in enrollment)
**data came from the WIAA school directories of each year

d1

Moving up from D2: Onalaska (885/-22), Sauk Prairie (842/-37) and West De Pere (807/+8)

d2

Moving down from D1: Grafton (825/-12) and New Berlin Eisenhower (802/-65)
Moving up from D3: Arcadia (343/+22), Howards Grove (326/-5), Oostburg (340/+19), Peshtigo (353/+22) and Westby(341/-12)

d3

Moving down from D2: Dominican (303/-84), Ladysmith (323/-12), Mondovi (322/-37), Neillsville (311/-51), Oconto (299/-95) and Random Lake (315/-17)
Additions to D3: Madison Country Day (31) & Eastbrook Academy (52)

Looking at the division news, only two things really pop out from the competition standpoint. The first, Onalaska, only because it is a storied distance running program on the girls side. The second, Ladysmith, because of superstar junior, Andi Ostenso (PRs: 4:54/10:35/14:01) . This change means that she and Molly Seidel will race at state in D3! Possibly the two best individuals in the state next year?

The only other intriguing findings were Oconto's and New Berlin Eisenhower's purported enrollment shifts. Oconto lost approximately 1/4 of their student body!

I'm not 100% sure of how the WIAA determines enrollment, but I've been told that they look at the schools attendence on the 3rd monday of the school year. Maybe Oconto had a bad virus spreading around their school that day?

yeah really on oconto, how do you lose 95 kids that quick?

The count is taken on the 3rd Friday of September, however, I believe it's the enrollment on the 3rd Friday, not the attendance on that day; i.e. if you're home sick that day you still count.

That would make a lot more sense! lol

Enrollment is a headcount of students who are physically attending schools or receiving homebound instruction as of the third Friday in September.
http://dpi.wi.gov/lbstat/pubdata2.html

That is why they usually plan parties or giveaways that day so the kids show up.

The above is last year's conference layout. I tried writing to the WIAA to see if there were any "shifts" compared to last year's settings. I just got bounced around between people. If anyone spots an error let me know!

So...:

New high school, Indian Trail Academy (a Kenosha public high school), would join the Southeastern Conference;
Muskego would go to the Classic 8;
Pius XI would go to the Woodland;
Saint Thomas More is headed to "a new conference" which includes Midwest Classic Conference South schools (Racine and Kenosha County private schools, Whitefish Bay Dominican, Martin Luther and Burlington Catholic Central);

A year ago, the cross country programs recognized by the WIAA dropped from 391 to 390. Even though we add eight new programs to the mix this year and drop only the Winter cross country program (no one came out for xc), the 2012 season will have a total 395 cross country programs competing in its three divisions.

The biggest headlines come from the changes within D2. First, D2 has gotten smaller. Thirteen programs dropped to D3 and two schools moved up to D1 with only four programs moving into the division. There's 112 programs opposed to 123 in 2011. Second, D2 gains the recently expanded Kenosha Indian Trails high school which now, after several referendums, houses more students and a true athletic program. Third, Loyal/Greenwood picks up conference foe Granton and becomes a D2 school which may not bode well for the former mediocre D3 programs.

Moves from D2 to D1:

New Berlin Eisenhower
Port Washington

Moves from D1 to D2:

Pius XI
Sauk Prairie
Wilmot Union

Moves from D3 to D2:

Loyal/Granton/Greenwood

Moves from D2 to D3:

Arcadia
Brillion
Chetek-Weyerhauser
Howards Grove
Iowa-Grant/Highland
Kewaunee
Mischicot
Oostburg
Palmyra-Eagle
Parkview
Poynette
Westby
Weyauwega-Fremont

Additions:

Frederic
Johnson Creek
Kenosha Indian Trail
Necedah
Saint Ambrose
Tenor
Trinity
Wolf River Lutheran

Subtractions:

Winter

Odds and ends:

Granton joins Loyal/Greenwood and becomes a D2 school
Kenosha Indian Trail becomes D2 school
Kickapoo becomes parent school of Kickapoo/La Farge program
Green Lake and Princeton rejoin
Madison Country Day picks up Abundant Life Christian School
Goodman picks up Pembine
Gilman drops Cornell and Cornell joins with Lake Holcombe
Elmwood picks up Plum City
Wautoma picks up Faith Christian Academy

what had happened to frederic? why did they not have it for a year?

I dont think anyone was showing interest in the Fredric cross country program so they were forced to drop it.

sad, one of the more historic teams in d3, and they were always tough, and they had to drop it? that's terrible

Yeah you're right. The conference last year was just Albany, Pecatonica/Argyle, and, Cassville, but their conference was so small as far as the number of runners on those teams. On the girls side Pecatonica/Argyle was the only complete team so they automatically won. Pec/Argyle and Albany were looking for a competitive meet so they didn't have to go two weeks without a meet leading into sectionals so they asked to join the SWAL and it passed.
