WMass runs at Smith College for their regular season meets - a 200m track, not a short track. Yes it is unbanked but it is still 200m. In addition, they had an invitational at Springfield College - also a 200m unbanked track. The WMass athletes have more opportunities not in the Reggie or at BU to get qualifying marks than those in the MVC.

With the Frosh/Soph having it's new limitations, holiday meets when kids go away or are otherwise unavailable, many kids do not get their chance. I've seen miraculous time differences. A kid running a 41.x on a small track and then running 38.x at Reggie. Again, many CMass and WMass kids will get the shaft or have to put more races on their legs at additional meets (RI, etc...) in order to try get qualified or run Reggie the day after their league meet for the Last Chance to Qualify. I once again bring up the conversion standards for smaller tracks. If you've ever seen a sprinter run a 200, slide and slam into a wall or group of spectators, you'll know what I mean by how difficult it is to run these tracks. The distance kids have their own issue - the number of turns adding seconds. If there are powers that be on this board I hope you can hear what I am saying and do something to make a more equitable system.
Preach!!! More people understanding the inequity of the system that is indoor track in MA the better - welcome aboard!

When I say now is the time to contact those powers that be, I mean it sincerely. I recently sent them loads of information, including an attempt at indexing a track. If there are more voices backing the information I sent them, we could be on to something.

This topic came up at the District E committee meeting. Some were dismissive of the effort, but it made the agenda and it was suggested that we encourage coaches to contact their MSTCA committee representatives. The topic of attempting to have at least the District meet in Boston or closer to home at Tufts was also discussed. Cost of facility, including the required staff as well as transportation seemed to be the biggest objection raised. Cost of Fitchburg facility is substantially lower than any other facility and the cost of taking a bus to the burg is substantially less than to Boston and so it would unfairly hit districts with struggling budgets and smaller schools.

Default It is about the numbers

If administrators listen, they will listen to numbers....numbers of suggestions, numbers of athletes, number of parents. The biggest player in the game is the number of athletes participating in track and field, especially if athletes pay a fee to play. There is no other sport, other than football, that can draw the numbers track and field can draw and we need to make that the key ingredient in providing good experiences for the athletes in track and field. Tell me any other athlete that spends most of the winter training outside (I believe most schools do that) and then are forced to race in small, band box arenas that are unsafe.

I think all of us in this great sport need to toot our horns a bit louder so the rest of the people in charge and other sport fans finally discover the great sport of track and field.
