Hard to say. He and Fernandez are ridiculously talented and I believe both were/are more capable of running faster than the current US record 2 mile but there will need to be perfect conditions for it to happen.

As discussed in 2008 (and as we saw to some extent in the record attempt w/ Lagat in the Armory), running in no-man's land isn't exactly prime record-chasing territory. Low 8:30s would have you at the tail of any recent Pre 2-mile. That said, it's not hard to conceive of an Oregon signee being supplied with a raft of pacemakers to get him to 2000/2400m.

Not sure what you're disagreeing with here. I just said it's conceivable (and it's pretty clear now that Fernandez is at his best when leading, so being caught up in the muck at Pre would have been to his detriment).

Kevin, you are 100% right.
The likeliehood of LV getting this done without imtermediate pace setting help is less than 50/50 to me, as the odds of him going out too fast again, are far greater than settling in at 4:16-18 or so and then lifting home, as that will have you maybe too far off the back. Even the 8:30 runs in this probably were out in 4:10-12 and faded? I don;t think LV would try this if there was not a way that they figured this out already as his efforts have been clearly calculated and cherry picked. Fernandez whom I saw live do his thing in 8:34 would have surely run faster than that, as it was almost entirely solo really from the press point on of the effort. That being when he could not wait anymore behind anyone. |

If he's set up right, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to go under.
Set up right = not going out at a suicidal pace.

Other than that it's a tough record, and he still needs to find another 6 seconds? Not saying he can't do it, but "there's no reason why..." is silly when talking about something that no other US high schooler has ever done.

Voted no because I'm not sure he will have the proper pacemakers, but if he does, then I would say there is a very good likelihood he will get the record.
