That's how I would interpret the rule as well. I believe NCAA recruiting rules allow a coach to have contact with the athlete as well while in 8th grade but not after they enter high school until the summer before their senior year. That to me seems more odd but if you think about how young athletes in sports are being identified at summer camps, tournaments etc... it's not that surprising to read about 8th graders being recruited. Once they enter high school, the athlete and the colleges have to follow strict rules regarding no contact and live viewing periods prior to campus visits starting that summer prior to and during the senior year.
