Rube,
We have been watching the CSN post meet broadcasts out here and have decided you should transfer for the 2016 trials. |

Thought Culley looked strong, confident, fit. She races well in big spots. I would consider her chances to make the Olympic team excellent based on watching both races, she has standard, etc. That would be pretty darned cool. Did not see any of the steeples, but both Forys and Higginson are squarely in the mix, with Higginson maybe being more of a leading contending. Men's steeple seems destined to be one of those classic free-for-all's with a few guys stepping up with lifetime bests to become Olympians.
Women's 5000m, thought Culley looked to be the class of her semi. Molly Huddle looked pretty darned good in the other, but other than that... Agree on NBC, I don't get all fired up about this stuff as much anymore, but Hammond sounds like a guy who's never been to a track meet. Can't get names right, etc. How is Abby D'Agostino so hard to pronounce. Jeesh. Pitiful. Grote |

The commentating remains poor, but I will say that the actual footage of the events has improved.
They still don't cover the field events, and never did; that hasn't changed. But honestly, did you ever think you'd see nearly the entire women's 5k heats? That's a huge improvement from when you wouldn't even seen the final, except for a couple of laps at the end. Heck, you were lucky to see any coverage of an event over 1500m. So yes, long way to go, but they've actually improved. I guess it's not that hard when you have atrocious coverage to begin with, but going the right direction. And remember, with all the problems with the commentary, the other options out there are: Larry Rawson, Carol Lewis, or the flotrack fanboys.

Flotrack fanboys are definitely fanboys, but they know everyone's name and creds, and can speak knowledgeably about the sport. Tom Hammond calls these meets like the heat sheets were handed to him 2 minutes before air-time.
I think a bunch of little tweaks would help the broadcast. Lap splits on the screen would be nice, maybe even a graphic that pops up each lap with the split and a projected finish time based on pace. How about a crawl during heat 2 of the 5k showing the winning time from heat 1, the 6th place time from heat 1, and the time to beat in order to advance on time? Is it that hard to do a split-screen/picture-in-picture thing so you can still see the track events happening when they cut away to the field? The HJ had some serious potential for drama yesterday but it gets lost in the constant cutting away - show both events at the same time!
