USA HS Kids at IAAF Fiinish International Training Center

Phase III of the NSSF Kultan Kehas Javelin Gold Performance Clinic has begun...,
Six nationally ranked USA HS javelin athletes, including National Record holder Haley Crouser and # 2 all time Sean Keller and girls # 2 all time Avion Allgood and #2 US this year, Christine Streisel plus 2 other 200' + boys are here in Kuortane Finland under the tutelage of Kimmo Kinnunen ( 1991 World Champ and son of 1968 Olympic silver medalist Jorma Kinnunen ) for 8 days of intensive training..... There were two 4 day training camps in NC earlier this year... This camp and the similar TJ camp are part of the NSSF's commitment to the improvement of junior T and F in the US.....
There is also a 70 year old attempting the javelin for the first time!
One very different aspect of the Finnish method is the inclusion of " games " interspersed with every session..... Floor hockey,VB, team handball, frisbee golf, etc., are an integral part of Finnish training in virtually every sport..... Quite unlike anything I have seen here in the US.... There are no worries about injury even tho these "games" are very competitive and contact is encouraged....every training session begins with a "game", has one in the middle and ends with one.

Sean Keller representing WA. Crazy to see his progression over the last few years.

We took the kids on a five hour bus ride to the gorgeous city of Oulu right on the Arctic Circle..... Long day! Steady heavy ra in all day....our kids were terrific.... One actually got a PR yunder s ome extremely trying c ondi tons. 48 degrees, howling driving rain all day.... Horizontal at times.... Our kids were troopers.... Very impressive meet operation.....on schedule, immediate results... Some kid ran 10 :43 in those conditions...... O ur kids all medaled.... 5 in the Jav,one in the women's shot throwing 44'9".... Sean Keller threw 235' in some rather difficult conditions. I planned on throwing but 48 deg ,wind, heavy rain, a sore hammy and a bad shoulder convinced me otherwise.... Actually Kimmee Kinnunen convinced...if there is a better event coach
On this planet I would love to meet hi m....I am convinced since the meet Promoters knew we were comings and had sp net so much$ that they held the meet...... No way this event would have been held in US.
PL
We will be back next year with two of the same kids and h op efully a bunch more if funding holds out.....
Btw, after a week of epicurean hotel food the kids insisted upon McDonald's..... $123.15 for 11 people..... Well, it's reindeer meet!

All I can say is what a week..... especially for the six javelin kids who we brought ....... If only USATF would do something like this....problem is they believe programs like this have no value.....unless a kid is post collegiate and ALREADY national caliber it is money poorly spent ( that is pretty close to a quote from the USATF person who deals with jr programs. ).....in a competition in Oulu Tuesday night one of the kids, Felpel, had a PR.... after a very intense week of two a days and in 48 deg and pouring rain....

I understand this is a message board and I'm probably gonna come off as an asshole for saying this but I honestly had trouble even understanding what was being posted in this thread. Can we all try a little harder to make things coherent? Thanks.

Read the first post on this thread.....the NSSF (btw, it is now NSAF) has instituted two programs designed to improve US performance in the TJ and the javelin... Go to www.nationalscholastic.org and you will understand what it is-all about....a bright guy like you should have no trouble figuring out what we are trying to do.
