second of 3 sections at ISU (fast heat won in 4:03, believe Llamas was 4th overall):
Section 2 1 Llamas, Brian Unattached 4:10.78 2 Baldwin, Alec Unattached 4:11.01 3 Zankowski, Kyle Iowa State U 4:11.73 4 Brockmueller, Bobby Unattached 4:11.81 5 Schoen, Parker Nebraska Wesleyan 4:12.50 6 Brady, Doug Drake University 4:12.70 7 Brockmueller, William Unattached 4:20.23 8 Dado, Steve Unattached 4:23.10 9 Flynn, Ryan Drake University 4:35.62 Good run by Llamas and I think a pretty big PR for Zankowski (St. Charles North) if i had to guess? Judging from the small spread up front, I'd guess it closed pretty hard but I don't actually have any idea of splits or whatnot |

I was avoiding some work this afternoon and decided to do a "how have our high schoolers fared?" kinda thing w/ the very narrow parameters of a top 10 list from 800-5000 for the 2012 indoor season prior to the national meets. Obvious limitations: not everyone's killing it indoors or even racing; a number of current college athletes have PRs falling well under some of the cutoffs on these lists but haven't run as fast THIS season, which is hardly fair criticism (in fact this is true of some of these athletes as well); etc. Still interesting.
(if i missed anyone, let me know and i'll update my lists) 800m: (I included Mazar as it seems to me he was very much made @ Edwardsville) 1. Ryan Lynn (Maine South/Illinois) 1:49.41 2. Peter Callahan (North Shore Country Day/Princeton) 1:49.72 3. Joe McAsey (Minooka/Illinois) 1:49.64 4. Randall Babb (Wheaton Warrenville South/Notre Dame) 1:50.17 5. Daniel Mazar (Edwardsville/Oklahoma) 1:50.39 6. Mat Smoody (Palatine/Illinois State) 1:50.46 7. Nathan Prom (Dundee Crown/Iowa) 1:50.90 8. Sean Wiggan (Waubonsie Valley/Eastern Illinois) 1:51.76 9. Bryce Basting (Normal West/Eastern Illinois) 1:52.56 10. Graham Farnsworth (Wheaton North/Illinois) 1:52.75 Mile: 1. Peter Callahan 3:58.76 2. Chris Derrick (Neuqua Valley/Stanford) 3:59.13 3. Zach Dahleen (Sandburg/Southern Illinois) 4:00.16 4. Jeff Thode (Conant/Iowa) 4:06.11 5. Kyle Engnell (Schaumburg/Illinois) 4:06.44 6. Jack Driggs (York/North Carolina) 4:07.05 7. Nico Composto (Loyola/Columbia) 4:07.41 8. Nick Holmes (Limestone/Iowa) 4:07.77 9. Brian Llamas (Downers Grove North/Iowa State) 4:10.78 10. Kyle Zankowski (St. Charles North/Iowa State) 4:11.73 3000: 1. Chris Derrick 7:50.18 2. Jeff Thode 8:06.03 3. Nico Composto 8:09.80 4. Andrew Larsen (Marmion/Minnesota) 8:12.44 5. Jim Riddle (Neuqua Valley/Illinois) 8:13.51 6. Aaron Beattie (Neuqua Valley/Washington) 8:14.84 7. Zach Dahleen 8:16.46 8. Kevin Havel (Hersey/Stanford) 8:17.62 9. Daniel Dunbar (O'Fallon/Southern Illinois) 8:18.46 10. Graham Morris (Lawrenceville/Eastern Illinois) 8:19.02 5000: 1. Chris Derrick 13:19.58 2. Jim Riddle 14:03.16 3. Michael Schmidt (New Trier/Middlebury) 14:10.30 4. Kevin Havel 14:13.99 5. Colin Mickow (Princeton/Illinois) 14:16.27 6. Aaron Beattie 14:16.80 7. Dustin Emerick (Elmwood/Southern Indiana) 14:19.24 8. Neal Anderson (Glenwood/Southern Illinois) 14:26.22 9. Josh Stein (Marmion/Loyola) 14:30.62 10. Martin Grady (Fenwick/Notre Dame) 14:35.09 Brief Thoughts: It's remarkable how well that great Neuqua team has done--people always seem to expect all of the individuals on a all-time team to become national class, which is totally unreasonable. But for 3 HS teammates (Derrick, Riddle, and Beattie) to have run 13:19/14:03/14:16 and 7:50/8:13/8:14 is pretty remarkable. Also it leads me to wonder: What ever happened to Danny Pawola? He'd run some good times at Penn State (4:13/14:19) but hasn't raced all year. Are the spikes hung up for good? Think of that, the 2008 Neuqua Valley top 4 in college w/ PRs of 13:19, 14:03, 14:16 and 14:19. That's ridiculous. Also, Thode's not been having the best year given that he ran 3:58 indoors last season. Here's hoping his outdoor season is a little better. Also D2 guy Emerick ran 28:40ish for 10k last year which is not only dirty in its own right, but amazing considering his current season best for half the distance is 14:19 and I don't think he's ever broken 14:10. My grad assistant was asking me about Illinois guys and brought up Emerick, who I didn't even realize was from Illinois. Talk about improvement! It also warrants mentioning that Pat Geoghegan (OPRF/Syracuse), who narrowly missed this list w/ his early 14:37, did run a 14:21 indoors as a sophomore. Lastly, can we take a moment to appreciate how good Michael Schmidt is? 14:10 at Middlebury. He's the d3 leader and 14:10 is EXTREMELY fast regardless of division. I doubt many A) realized how good he's become or B) would've ever expected it. Very impressive. |

I figured out the mystery. I wonder why he was allowed to run at the Midwest Distance Gala. |

Props to Zach Dahleen. He was good in hgih school, but who would have guessed that he would be a sub 4:00, low 8:00 guy? Great job by him. |

Danny decided to stop competing. He is going to be heading overseas to study and was simply not enjoying it anymore.

although sad that he got to that point with the running, major props to him for realizing it and not continuing to do it just to make others happy.
