i was following the live play by play (didnt want to risk a stream on my GF's computer). Seems like derrick hung back early, made a move up to the front of the chase pack midway, got gapped by the front 3 starting with 2k to go and could not make up the difference the last 2 laps.

I watched the whole broadcast of the race, so I saw everything minus commercial breaks. This is a good breakdown of what happened. It was very evident that with two to three laps to go that Rupp, Teg, and Ritz were definitely going to make the team if they avoided a major collapse. Ritz and Rupp set the pace early, and during the second half of the race, they slowly dropped the pace to where they were definitely under A standard pace. Teg was the only one who held on as Derrick and Braun were gapped. With two laps to go, Rupp easily pulled away and Teg passed Ritz. It looks like Derrick closed a little bit on Ritz and Teg, but he never was going to catch them as he was just a little too far back. He'll have another shot in 4 years, but I like that Dathan got a chance to go to the Olympics considering his marathon heartbreak.

I wound up reading through the Elite threads after you posted this. I'm really happy for Chris. This was an amazing year for him, and to race in his 4th 10k of the spring, place one spot out of qualifying, AND come within 9 seconds of his PR in much worse conditions than what he set the PR in, that's just awesome. The best part is knowing that he will continue to improve

so idk too much in this subject, but if derrick had made it, would he have to extend his track season training all the way to august after already doing big indoor and outdoor ncaa seasons? i mean hes obviously one of america's most elite 10k runners but wouldnt that have been a lot on his plate?

yes he would have had 1 more track race at least, and it would have been a lot on his plate. However considering the meet he would have been competing at, it would have been worth it.

Default Long college season, yes

The long NCAA college season--with xc then indoor and outdoor champs--has always put the top American college distance runners at a disadvantage when it comes to the Olympics. If you train and point for NCAAs, you are gassed for the summer; if you point for the Olympic trials and Olympics, you might not be at your best for spring college track. Some have even left the college scene so they could train more directly for the summer international events--like Evan Jager? It has even been argued that it is too hard--and a disadvantage for Americans--to have to peak for the trials and then again for the Olympics a month or two later. This is an old problem. Hats off to Derrick and other college runners. Next time around they will be pros training just for the trials and the Olympics.

i would agree with you for the most part, but a big reason jager left was that his coach departed after his freshman year and he wanted to stay with him, which meant turning pro.

A lot of the experts hate the Trials because they think the best team with chances to medal doesn't get selected. They say it ruins the peak of some athletes because they had to try to peak twice instead of once. I think that if an athlete has to hit their peak to make the US Team, they weren't going to medal anyway. For example, Galen Rupp's 27:25 jog was just a tuneup race for the games. He didn't have to run his best to easily make the team, and he's not even close to a lock for a medal. Gatlin, Merrit, Jeter, and Felix (in the 200 hopefully) shouldn't have to peak for the trials in order to make the team. All have legitimate shots at gold medals. The 3rd place guys who don't have much of a shot at gold can go ahead and peak for the trials because they weren't going to medal anyway.

A case in point against the long season was Emma Coburn of Colorado who redshirted the outdoor season with London in mind. Previously a Wetmore coached Barringer had run a very long season coming into Beijing and finished 9th (albeit in a PR and American Record). I think he rethought the situation for Emma who had been nicked up last year.
