Yeah, that's my backyard, so to speak. I drive by that building two or three times a week, and ride the Metro through Silver Spring every day (and will be doing so in about an hour, hopefully).
Sounds like the guy is a hard-core anarchist/environmentalist, an angry guy who has repeatedly protested outside the Discovery building (once by throwing money into the air to attract a crowd) after they turned down some of his ideas for programs. Hopefully this will end well. |

Damn! I rode the Metro homeward this afternoon -- had to change trains right at Silver Spring. You can see the Discovery building from the Metro platform (it's above ground at that point), and I could clearly see all the cop cars and the roads and sidewalks closed off with yellow tape, and pedestrians a block away craning their necks and taking cell-phone photos.
At 4:47, approximately, I would have sworn I heard a gunshot. But just at that moment my train pulled (loudly) up and it was impossible to know whether that was what I actually heard. Really a shame they had to shoot the guy, but if he was trying to set off explosive devices I guess they had no choice. I read on a blog somewhere that the guy whose book apparently inspired Lee was called by a reporter for his reaction. It was more or less "Oh my god -- I can't believe someone twisted my thoughts into that sort of action. I really wish I could talk to him." That was maybe an hour or so before the end of the drama. |
