And the reason behind the law the kids broke was to ensure (to the best of the ability to do so) that only people who know what they are doing and have a license that shows they can properly cook food and keep clean cooking kitchens will sell food to the public. Did they violate both the law and the reasoning behind it?

how can you possibly claim that it is ridiculous to equate selling food to going one mile over the speed limit, yet it is totally fine to equate selling food to selling beer out of a truck? Just because all three of them are illegal doesn't mean they are all the same. They should be treated differently since they are all different scenarios. The fact that they are kids selling brownies merely means they should get the benefit of the doubt, more so than a 40 year old man selling beer.

What I find ridiculous are the reactions from people who suggest that the kids' business would open a floodgate for other businesses (seeing as the kids were raking it in), that the parents are somehow stupid for allowing their kids to have a bake sale, or that the kids had malicious intentions to hurt someone/knowingly do illegal things for their own benefit.

I didn't make the analogy of selling beer out of a truck.

But, it is closer. Speeding doesn't involve selling anything, selling beer out of a truck without a license is MUCH CLOSER to selling other food without a license.

And I also didn't make the argument about it opening up a flood gate either.

Ok, yes, selling beer vs. selling food is more physically similar, in that they both involve selling something. That clearly was not what I was talking about. My point is that if you say it's ridiculous to compare selling food to driving one mile over the speed limit (because it's a gross exaggeration), you have acknowledge that it is equally ridiculous to compare selling brownies to selling food (because it's a gross exaggeration). There are obvious differences between selling beer vs. selling brownies. This would be a much different conversation if the kids were selling beer or four lokos or something, for obvious reasons.

Equally, hell no.

Selling and selling are MUCH closer than selling and driving.
