I thought we always saw a rise in prices as we approach the summer driving season.

We have been unseasonably high the past few months, mostly from Iran and other middle-eastern issues. We actually should be .30 - .40 cheaper right now, it is just that the oil companies have been slow to bring the price back down. Imagine that . Of course, once the prices start coming back down, then they will claim the summer driving season is pushing prices back up.

I assume since the GOPers blamed Obama for rising gas prices, they'll credit him for the recent fall in prices?

Interestingly, I was chatting yesterday with my garage guy, who manages an Exxon station down the street. Very nice guy, Cambodian immigrant named Hai (always a bit awkward saying, "Hi, Hai!"). Anyway, he was on the phone when I stepped into his office, talking to someone from the main office. Turns out some big oil company recently bought that station and hundreds of other Exxon stations from Exxon, but they overextended themselves in the process, so now they're trying to jack up the gas price they charge the franchisees. Meantime, Hai's station sits directly across the street from two other stations, including one owned by a big grocery-store chain that seems to have the policy of always being at least 1 cent cheaper than any nearby station. So Hai, after being in business there for 22 years, is being squeezed so hard as he tries to stay competitive that he says he may not make it. I suddenly had a little more sympathy for the station franchisees -- if not for the big bad oil companies.
(Despite the pressure from the company, he dropped his price by a nickel from the morning, when I dropped off the car, to the afternoon, when I picked it up. Now $3.94.)

Geez, we are still in the high $4.70s for premium and $4.40s for regular here around the corner at the BP.

I had to take my son to a soccer game out in the suburbs today (7:30am kick off ). I filled it up out there and it was still in the $4.20s for regular at a Shell station, about 40 minutes due west of the lake. Usually the suburbs are significantly lower because there is no city tax.

It will take more than this to make me not vote for Obama, though

Jersey still has some of the lower prices (low gas taxes for some inexplicable reason), but we used to almost always be the lowest in the country. That seems to be changing. The cheap places are in the high 3.50's and the brands are a dime to 20 cents more.
