got this response from someone pretty familiar with the LZ team and situation going into the state meet.

as for those curious about lz's 4x800, they figured they could medal in either the 4x8 or 4x4 but not both. the lz 2-milers have zero leg speed and don't run the 4x8 anyways and there was only 1 senior on the 4x8 (brend) compared to 2 on the 4x4 (brend and brinlee)

they weren't worried about brend doing the 4x8 so much as juras and rantis being able to compete at a high level in 2 events

and the strategy worked - 4x4, juras, and brend were all-state, the only guy on the 4x8 who didn't get a medal was only a soph and will obviously have time
Does that answer your question to your satisfaction?

i don't know about that analogy haha.

but yeah, i'm a firm believer that if you qualify for something you run it (at that level, especially, where participation is a huge part of the point. the higher the level of competition gets, the less i might feel so strongly about it)

I still don't fully understand. The team at sectionals ran a 7:53 and 3:20 and then Juras went on to run 4:19 himself (all with likely much less rest than he would have had at the state meet). I'm assuming the 2 milers didn't compete in either relay, so they are irrelevant. Both 7:53 and 3:20 would have made finals and will in almost every year, as would 4:19. So if they run the exact lineup as finals they still qualify the same number to finals including one extra relay?

my guess is they didnt want to burn brend out by having him run 6 races in 1 weekend. Either that or they were not confident in juras coming back on saturday.

Maybe llamas shouldn't try to sit and kick in every race. If he went for it like withall did, he wouldn't have gotten railed by Fayette at sectionals.

i already said he is at fault for not racing better. i'm not defending him or anything. try reading the whole post next time.

no matter who misses out, i still think its a dick move to pull out of your first event at states as though you had no plans to race it at all.

EDIT:
it occurs to me that older Silver did the same thing our junior year, the only year he qualified in the 1600, so he could focus on 4x8 finals. not the first event he ran, so it is a little different. but still. maybe i'm a hypocrite.

if we had made finals in 4x8 my sr year (we choked in prelims), i was probably scratching the mile, in which i had qualified on time "right on the button". I had done something to my hammy in 4x8 prelims and knew i only had 1 good race left in me, figured i would try to PR by 7 seconds in the 1600 to make finals since i didnt have the 4x8 the next day, needless to say that didnt go so well.....

I definitely agree with those who say that scratching the 4x8 as your first event (typically those who are doing 16/32 double) are lame, especially if you were a place qualifier and took away a spot from someone. Time qualifiers are not as big of a deal, since they didnt rob a spot.
