I used to be pretty hard into drugs before picking up running.
I think the most harmful part of the marijuana would be the smoking. I don't care what any hippy says, any kind of smoke you inhale is not good for you. Now i'm not a doctor, but there are studies done about oxygen consumption and marijuana use, both short term and long term. However, that being said: if you are a responsible adult (who lives in a medical state ) than in moderation I dont see why not. Certainly you dont want to if you're an elite athlete, but for a regular running joe, go ahead. But if we're talking about drugs for running performance: 400mg caffeine +20mg ephedrine or 20mg amphetamine.

I know 2 runners that were fast, I'm talking a 1:59, 4:23, 9:30 kid and and a 4:28, 10:15, 16:08 kid, both would smoke pot, maybe not everyday but probably once or twice every 2 weeks. One of them said it helps expand lungs and sleep/relax better before a race.

obviously it doesn't help long-term, but you can smoke a lot of weed and be a damn good distance runner.

vaporizing or eating it are the healthiest ways to go about it
honestly if i have to deal with insomnia and 3 hours of sleep vs. chiefin it and getting my 7-8 it's a no-brainer. haha is that a pun? i don't even know anymore, dre told me the herb causes brain damage but then he turns around and said he taught me to smoke weed. which is it? |

Did Hicham El Guerroj, Bekele, Gebreselassie, or any of those guys do marijuana? Heck no. Does that answer your question? You cant smoke and be good at distance running idc what any of you say!

Honestly, it probably won't hurt you too much if you don't do it too often. As long as you don't let it affect your training (i.e. making you incredibly lazy). Obviously it doesn't help though. As long as you don't have super high aspirations running-wise I say go for it if you want to. Better to have fun in college while you can.

LOL Fitz!
The list of great runners who either smoked tobacco before or during their greatness is probably endless, and that type of smoke is far harsher on the lungs. Just to name a few... do you know who Chris Chattaway, Steve Jones, and Patti Dillon are? I should hope you recognize at least one of those names. It must be nice living in your fairy tale land. |
